Written by John Edward Betancourt It’s amazing how fast time flies when it comes to football. For just a few weeks ago we were celebrating its return and just like that, we have reached the quarter-mark of the season and we are just now starting to see what most of the teams in this league are all about. The elite look elite, the bad look shockingly bad and everyone in between is working toward acquiring as many wins as they can to enjoy a post season berth. Which means this weekend’s slate of games are downright critical to some teams, as they try to continue to enjoy success or find their first real taste of it and that means we are in for some incredible matchups and here are the games and the storylines that I’ll be keeping my eye upon this weekend. Is this the week when the Minnesota Vikings finally put it all together? Let’s face facts, this Minnesota team does not resemble last year’s squad in the slightest. While they came out of the gate hot in week one, they’ve fizzled as of late with a tie in Green Bay and an embarrassing loss at home against the lowly Bills and it’s inherently clear at this point, that this team has yet to jell and work as one. So, is this the week where that happens? It’s possible, but I don’t have a lot of faith in that simply because they’re going up against the hottest team in the NFL right now in the Rams. But, if the Vikings defense can slow down Todd Gurley and confuse Jared Goff, and Kirk Cousins can take advantage of the depleted Los Angeles secondary, they’ve got a shot. But the Rams are incredibly talented, and my guess is, we will have to wait another week before we see Minnesota come together. Can the New England Patriots rebound from their epic loss to the Lions this week? While I know there’s been plenty of talk as to how New England has been 1-2 before and gone to the Super Bowl from having a poor record ad nauseum, I honestly have major concerns about this team. They look rattled, they are playing awful on offense and defense and they’re hosting a fearless Miami squad that is playing as though they have nothing to lose, and you know they licking their chops at the opportunity to make the Patriots 1-3. Which means I’m expecting the Dolphins to come out swinging and don’t be surprised if they follow the Detroit playbook and blanket the already thin New England receiving corps while feasting upon that awful secondary on their way to a 4-0 record. Will the San Francisco 49ers be able to win a game without their star quarterback? Any way you slice it, Jimmy Garoppolo really has changed the course of the 49ers for the better since his arrival and well, his loss is quite the huge deal. Because while the team is 1-2 right now, his leadership and toughness inspire this squad and since San Francisco really didn’t do much to bolster the quarterback position via free agency, I have concerns about this team’s ability to go anywhere or do anything with C.J. Beathard at the helm. He was just…bleh, last season and didn’t exactly inspire his squad to do better so unless he comes out and surprises on Sunday, expect another loss, and plenty more after that as the Niners remind the league of the importance of having a quality backup QB on the roster.
