Written by Kate McHargueWe have a new President and his name is Donald J. Trump. This is simply a fact. And regardless of personal opinion or political leanings, it is also a fact that not everyone is pleased about it. And many have turned to a near and dear trilogy to express their displeasure. Since his inauguration on January 20th the internet has blown up with memes, videos, and articles comparing our new President to Darth Sidious, drawing parallels between his proposed Cabinet and the Empire, and even playing the famous Darth Vader theme whenever he enters a room. But the Star Wars imagery I’m most interested in, is the return of a new hope in the form of dearly departed Princess Leia. The day after the inauguration saw millions of women worldwide marching to express their concern, their frustration, and their determination to affect change. Each woman marched for a different reason but they all marched together in a truly inspiring display of solidarity. It was a sight to see, to be sure, most notably because of the various signs that were held aloft throughout the march. Some were funny, some were serious, some were just plain creative, but several were downright geeky. Star Wars was everywhere at the Women’s March here in Denver and around the country. Numerous signs quoted Jyn Erso, exclaiming that “Rebellions are built on hope!” Other signs paraphrased a Star Wars film title and simply read, “The Women Strike Back.” But the sign that was most popular and most fitting, was of Princess Leia holding her blaster with the words “A Woman’s Place is in the Resistance.” I still get a chill when I think about this poetic tribute. Princess Leia is an iconic symbol of rebellion against a fascist regime in film but the actress who portrayed her was also a champion of women’s rights. Beyond Star Wars, Carrie Fisher devoted her life to charitable work and advocating for the destigmatization of mental health issues. To many, she was and always will be a role model, a hero, and a powerful reminder of what women are capable of. Mark Hamill, her friend and co-star, had this to say about the popular signs: Putting aside political differences, as a Geek it was touching to see General Organa still playing her part in the rebellion. Not everyone was in support of the Women’s March and not everyone is in support of President Trump but everyone can agree that when it comes to choosing a symbol for your resistance, there is no one better than the woman who fought against injustice her entire life. Both onscreen and off. Princess Leia, thank you for your service. General Organa, I salute you. And Carrie Fisher, may you rest in peace and in power. May the force always be with you and with us all.
