Written by Scott Murray I’ve been playing video games in my own home since my tenuous childhood attempts at Solitaire and Minesweeper. Or, if you don’t count that, since the original Playstation. In all that time, there’s been only one game franchise that’s stayed with me all the way through to the present day: Ace Combat. Debuting in 1995, the franchise now totals fifteen games spanning several generations of home consoles, PC releases, handheld gaming systems, and even a few mobile installments. January 2019 will bring the sixteenth entry in the franchise and usher it onto yet another generation of consoles with the release of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. In honor of this long-standing franchise and the many hours of joy it has brought me, and in preparation for and anticipation of the next game, I’m here to guide you through an overview history of the franchise. I want to take a moment to give special thanks to the people at Acepedia – The Ace Combat Wiki. Their thorough and detailed wiki is a great resource for anyone looking to learn about the Ace Combat Franchise. They work tirelessly to ensure the wiki remains precise, accurate, and up-to-date, and the Ace Combat community is uniquely fortunate to have such dedicated people chronicling the history of this venerable franchise. Indeed, in this article I will discuss all the main entries and two of the larger spinoffs, but there are still games that I couldn’t find time to fit into my history, and I highly encourage you to visit the Acepedia and read up for yourself to get a full picture.
