Written by ShaeAs I sit here watching the new Fantastic Four movie, or rather, my dad has it on and refuses to change the channel, I couldn't help but think about superheroes. While I'm tempted to write about the worst superhero movies ever made, (trust me, that will eventually happen.) I'm more interested in the age old fight. Marvel vs. DC. Let's face it, each has their own set of characters and they even have very similar powers. Because, that's just how things go sometime. The powers may be different, or even the same, but which characters match which? Some are quite obvious like Batman and Iron Man. Both are stupidly rich, they don't have super powers, but they're stupidly smart. They both have dead parents, are only children, and yep you guessed it, butlers. While modern renditions of Iron Man have Jarvis as an AI rather than a person, he still counts. Both have something traumatic happen that makes them become the hero they are. So who's better? Batman knows many styles of martial arts, speaks many languages, and is hella talented at being a detective. Iron Man on the other hand is a man whore with a mechanical suit. Tony also nurses a drinking problem while Bruce is clearly mentally unstable. So they both win. Or lose. Or both. Superman has a long list of Marvel counterparts, but in actual terms of being a goodie goodie, law abiding citizen, that nod goes to Captain America. Steve Rogers is everything an American should be, he's strong, fights for freedom, and above all, he beats up Hitler.....so....there's that. Superman on the other hand stands for truth, justice, and the American way. Both are true patriots, except that Clark is a total alien and Steve is a science experiment. Steve's not got anything on Clark's powers. The Super Soldier has strength, intelligence, and good eyesight, but he can't just shoot lasers out of his eyes or fly. Superman might be the better hero, but Captain America is a man out of time and he still stands for so much. Let's talk archers! Hawkeye vs. Green Arrow, we know my favorite. Ignoring the film version, Clint Barton is a smart ass circus kid who never misses a shot, ends up deaf, and is as unlucky as they come. This little smart ass isn't the kind of guy to settle down and get married. Instead he's too busy being snarky and keeping up with superhumans. Oliver on the other hand is a rich playboy who is also a good shot, a bit snarky, but quite the dedicated hero. Oliver Queen is the heir to a successful empire who isn't just a good shot. So who's the best? They both are. I can't pick between my two blond archers. Though Red Arrow might beat them both. Wonder Woman going toe to toe with Black Widow? I'm not sure that's a fair fight. In fact, both win on this front. Natasha has a jaded past, but her badass moves keeps her at the top of the hero list. Next to her, Wonder Woman has been a heroic icon for girls everywhere. She's an Amazonian heroine with the powers of Athena. While Natasha is a former Russian spy turned hero. Both are strong female leads that would probably hang out rather than duke it out.
But regardless of how many times we go round and round to discuss which hero from which universe is the absolute best of the best, let's be honest...this is a battle that will never be decided. Every last one of these heroes has touched and inspired us in some special way and every hero we've talked about today proves that since they each match up so well. So really, when it comes to the battle of Marvel vs. DC, everyone wins. Plain and simple. Except when it comes to Captain America. Because he's better than Superman. Just saying.
