It is definitely safe to say, that the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+, is putting on a masterclass regarding reunion themed storytelling. Simply because, there has been no race to the finish line to reunite the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D and NCC-1701-E, in an effort to offer up fan service or to flat out get it over with. Instead, the return of these iconic characters has felt organic in nature, and it has left us wanting more, since we are oft curious as to who is going to return to the fold on any given week. And by not making that a priority that’s also allowed for an engaging story regarding fatherhood for Jean-Luc Picard and the emerging threat of the rogue Changelings to unfold in a wondrous and fascinating manner. But of course, it was only a matter of time before the crew of that intrepid namesake all returned to the fold, and while one could surmise that it was going to happen close to the end of the series, it turned out… that this side shy of the halfway point was the perfect opportunity to bring everyone from Star Trek: The Next Generation back on screen at last. A feat that ‘The Bounty’ accomplished by way of bringing Worf and Raffi aboard the U.S.S. Titan, to game their next moves in understanding what the Changelings had planned for Frontier Day and what they decided, brought forth one of the most epic episodes to ever grace the franchise. For everyone agreed that infiltrating Daystrom Station was the best way to defeat the Changeling threat and in doing so… fans from across the franchise were treated to all kinds of magnificent visuals and moments… courtesy of quite the threat. Since Starfleet was hunting the Titan and her crew and that forced the Titan to warp away and that decision left Riker, Worf, and Raffi to their own devices, to uncover a bevy of Easter Eggs at this Starfleet black site. Since they passed by the Genesis Torpedo from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and the remains of one James Tiberus Kirk and of course… they came to encounter the most unexpected surprise of all, who exactly was the artificial intelligence system present in this place. As it turned out, they were… another gift from Doctor Altan Soong. For he took the time before he passed to create another Golem, one that resembled Lieutenant Commander Data and his brother, and was filled to the brim with a bevy of fascinating programs. Specifically, the personalities of Lal, Altan Soong, B-4, Lore, and Data himself, all in the hopes of creating the perfect artificial life. One that could appreciate life experiences and even face mortality since the Golem was identical to Picard’s and that brought Brent Spiner back into the fold and undoubtedly the data they sought, since this modified Data bore witness to what was stolen on that fateful day, and all they needed to get at that information, was to have the Titan return post haste, before Starfleet security stopped them from leaving with this precious new android.
Which didn’t happen right away. For while at warp, Admiral Picard realized that they needed an assist from a brilliant engineer. Which brought the ship to Athan Prime, home of the Fleet Museum and home of one Commodore Geordi La Forge. Who came aboard the ship to try and talk some sense into Jean-Luc since he felt this mission was risking his daughter’s life and while they debated the finer points of risk and reward in regard to family… another beautiful moment of nostalgia took place for the fans… as Seven and Jack, explored the museum. Which put some historic ships on our viewscreens. Such as the U.S.S. Defiant from Deep Space Nine, the HMS Bounty from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the U.S.S. Voyager, a blink and you’ll miss it glimpse of the Enterprise NX-01 and we even got to see… James T. Kirk’s infamous U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A. Giving rise to emotions and wonder and perhaps the most organic use of Easter Eggs in the history of Easter Eggs.
But there was a rhyme and a reason to show us so many iconic vessels, for the Bounty had an item that would come in quite handy for the ship. Specifically, its cloaking device. For that could get the Titan in and out of a situation unscathed and unnoticed and with the help of the La Forge sisters, Jack Crusher was able to snag that cloaking device and install it. And Jack’s efforts to save a crew he barely knew, combined with Sidney’s powerful words to her father, helped Geordi to realize he needed to come along for the ride and help save the Federation and his family and extended family. And that wondrous heist and that epiphany brought forth some of the most powerful and moving moments of this particular tale. For the Titan returned to Daystrom Station and was able to bring Data, Worf, and Raffi aboard and in doing so… Geordi figured out how to combine that mess of programming as best he could and reactivate an old friend he hadn’t seen in decades. Which brought forth a touching and tearful reunion. One where Brent Spiner was able to shine as an actor yet again and where… ominous clouds began to gather regarding the story. Since Data eventually informed his new and former shipmates, that the original remains of Jean-Luc Picard are what was stolen from Daystrom Station and of course… Will Riker wasn’t present. Simply because Vadic personally came down to the station to capture him and torture him through any means necessary, including teasing pain for a loved one, specifically… Deanna. All of which made… for one amazing story. One that finally brought the entire TNG crew back on screen in the same story for the first time since Nemesis, and well… that was simply amazing. Because we’ve waited so long to seem them in the same story again and our wish was finally answered in a truly organic manner. Since nothing here felt forced or rushed and of course… the nostalgia of seeing these heroes on screen again, was wonderfully complimented by those endless Easter Eggs and callbacks to the franchise’s lore that either ignited curiosity in the uninitiated or outright brought tears to those who grew up watching those classic ships in action on the silver and small screen. Plus, this episode took the time to deepen the mystery revolving around the Changeling plot. Because clearly, they have a deep interest in the flesh and blood of the Picard family line. Why exactly, is difficult to say, but it would seem we are inching closer to that reveal and one epic finale. One that will undoubtedly see this crew reunite at last to save the galaxy once again. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt There was a time when the spin-off was quite the risky gamble for a television network. For audiences seemed to only enjoy the source series and when a spin-off arrived, they were often met with lukewarm or devastating ratings. But the times have indeed changed. For now, in this era of peak television, one that features amazing writing and serialized, universe themed storytelling… the fans want more and want to explore every corner of that respective world, and that’s brought forth successful spin-off after successful spin-off. But only a handful of them… have enjoyed the incredible success that has accompanied the shows that make up the Power Universe on STARZ. Written by John Edward Betancourt Spring is a season that brings with it a bevy of activities for us take part in. Such as long walks on those perfect days to enjoy the sun and bask in its wonder. Plus, it lifts our spirits up with a sense of rebirth and renewal, courtesy of baby birds chirping amongst lush and green trees that sit atop equally lush and green grass. Wiping away all memories of the cold and desolate winter. But what’s truly fascinating about spring, is that despite how excited we are to immediately get out there and enjoy the warmer temps and everything nature has to offer… we tend to not spend hours outside until a little later on in the season. Simply because… the early days of spring begin with, a need to clean and reset… through spring-cleaning. Which keeps us busy and keeps us indoors until we feel good about the state of our homes, since no one likes going out and coming back to a messy place, and since we are working hard getting our homes in order, that puts us in dire need of entertainment to unwind. The kind that only television can provide since it knows how to re-fuel our minds or help us escape thoughts of that one guest room we don’t want to touch. Of course, we also don’t want to think too hard about what to watch on those busier days, since we’re tired from scrubbing and that is where networks like Showtime come into play. Since they are kind enough to release their upcoming monthly programming guides well in advance, so we can plan accordingly and thankfully they have us covered for the early days of spring. For their April 2023 programming lineup is available now, in fact, we’re here to share that with you… so you can properly unwind on those busy spring-cleaning days that lie ahead. ‘It’s no April Fool’s Day joke that SHOWTIME has exceptional arrangement of series and documentaries for viewers to sink their teeth into this month including the upcoming four-part docuseries, CATCHING LIGHTNING. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Eight of ‘The Ark’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
We firmly believe, that whenever someone commits a heroic act, of any kind, positive recognition is in order. Because they went above and beyond to do something wonderful and they likely kept people safe in the process, so yes… their bravery and their decision to protect should indeed be celebrated by all. But while that is an uplifting and joyous belief to hold to, it, like many things in this life… isn’t always so black and white. Because sometimes… heroic acts aren’t grounded in nobility and sacrifice. They come forth out of a sense of survival or they might come to fruition courtesy of circumstances that are not positive in the slightest, making the act nothing more than a reactionary moment. Which is why we need to take the time to really weigh the details of what went down, to properly understand if a celebratory moment is at hand or one of pause. If anything, the need to ponder upon the true genesis of a heroic act is top of mind today simply because that was something Captain Garnet had to ponder upon in the next episode of The Ark on SYFY. For ‘Every Single Person Matters’ was a story that picked up a short while after Lieutenant Lane roused William Trust from his slumber to send his command codes over to Ark Three to prevent the ship’s destruction. An act that could indeed be seen as heroic. But since it was born from deception and remained mired in deception… since Lane refused to answer hails or inform the captain of how this went down (in part because he took a shot to the skull from Trust’s wife, Helena), it fell into that cloudier territory regarding noble/heroic acts. Simply because… Lane understood this was a reactionary measure, one that would bring forth strife and trouble and that was most certainly the case. Because eventually, Strickland and his search party found the secret Trust cabin, and they of course had Lane stand before the captain to answer for his actions and since Captain Garnet took the time to properly question Lane and come to understand that his actions were not heroic, but grounded in deceit and survival instinct, the Lieutenant paid the price. By having his rank stripped from his shoulders. For Garnet simply would not stand for this kind of rogue and reckless behavior, and the extended fallout from Lane’s decision, only made life harder for the captain. Because William Trust was not well-liked or respected aboard this vessel, and that led to some serious and scary conflict. The kind that saw Brice straight up serve a knuckle sandwich to ‘The Savior of Humanity’ and other people were quick to spit at his feet and chew him and his wife out. But having him aboard did have its merits. Since the FTL drive didn’t quite work as planned and had it not been for Trust’s quick thinking and ability to move and inspire people into action, who knows if the ship would have survived a brush with faster than light travel. But that was really the only major benefit to waking him early. Since he quickly resumed his troublesome ways in matters of love with Cat and discussed in some detail with her… a plan that clearly came to life during their time on Earth. And of course… he inspired Lane to stand with him at all costs. All of which made for a fine lesson on how heroism can be subjective and sullied at times, when doing the right thing for the wrong reasons comes into play and Trust’s time on the ship, brought forth one fascinating exploration regarding this enigmatic character. Simply because, it was intriguing to learn about William Trust and his relationship with the world and the power he yields and clearly… he will serve as an allegory for the ridiculously rich in this tale and provide commentary on such matters in the weeks to come and he will likely bring forth more trouble as well. Since guys like Trust don’t like sitting on the sidelines for very long and he clearly has an agenda brewing and speaking of trouble… it would seem that Kelly has an agenda of her own. One that involves winning the trust of dear Angus and well, that also adds to the fascination surrounding this tale, since we are now dying to know what will come of Kelly’s machinations and of course… what Trust will do now that he is awake and building his own coalition, and checking in on old business, and that is going to make the wait for next week’s episode, as painful as can be. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 304 of ‘The Mandalorian’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
It is definitely safe to say that the Star Wars Universe has mastered the wonder of the mystery. For the entire franchise is rife with mysteries revolving around the rich characters that populate this galaxy, far, far away, the kind that simmer in the background and the back of our minds before grand reveals arrive at the right moment. Such as the mystery surrounding Darth Sidious, one that eventually revealed that he was the future Emperor in disguise at the proper moment, or that Supreme Leader Snoke was nothing more than a genetically engineered pawn designed to pave the way for the return of Palpatine. And sometimes those mysteries extend into the character’s journeys as well. Since Luke Skywalker hadn’t a clue why Darth Vader was so obsessed with finding him, only to learn it was because Vader was in fact… his father. In fact, the franchise is so good at this, that it has even extended to the television shows that currently make up our Star Wars fix, such as The Mandalorian. For young Grogu has been mired in nothing but mystery. After all, we knew nothing about him when he was first introduced, just that he needed to be protected, and it took a season and a half to reveal his name and even then… mystery continued to surround this cute little Jedi-in-waiting. Because we still knew nothing regarding how the little fella escaped the horrors of Order 66. But since this grand and sweeping universe knows how to drop truth at just the right time, a singular moment in this week’s story… served as the right time to peel back the mysterious veil surrounding little Grogu. A moment that was set up in ‘Chapter 20: The Foundling’ by bringing trouble to the Mandalorian hideout. For while the Mandalorians trained and trained hard to be ready in combat, as was the way, a Foundling was snatched away by a mighty flying beast. Which prompted a search party to be assembled to bring him home, which left little Grogu in the care of the Armorer and others. And while he was simply taking in the moment and preparing to receive wondrous armor from this skilled Beskar-smith… the sounds and the tension of the day revealed unto us that Grogu had a little bit of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from Order 66, and rightfully so. Because we came to learn in this tale, that he was in fact, in the Jedi Temple on that dark day and was of course, surrounded by danger and at one point, nearly lost his life. For his Jedi escort fell to the might of the burgeoning Empire, but not all hope was lost for Grogu. For a kind Jedi (played by Ahmed Best, more on that in a moment) risked everything to fend off the Clone Troopers and get little Grogu to safety. Making it clear that this was a scary day, one that he would not have survived without the help of that Jedi, and that really was the perfect way to introduce this backstory and it served as a fascinating bookend to the harrowing story taking place across the sands. Wherein Bo-Katan and Din Djarin and the rest of the search party, had to fight and fight hard to bring that Foundling home. Which they did, with minimal trouble and wounds, in fact, a lost piece of armor on Bo-Katan’s uniform was really the only damage done during this daring rescue. Giving rise to a happy ending, hints about the mysticism to come… since Bo-Katan did bring up the Mythosaur to the Armorer, and most important of all… the answers we’ve sought regarding Grogu. For this episode masterfully solved another long-standing Star Wars mystery, in classy fashion no less. Because let’s be honest… it was just incredible to see Ahmed Best return to the franchise triumphantly, (especially after the hell the toxic response to Jar Jar Binks put him through) and play the amazing Jedi hero that he did in this particular tale. And well, now that we have answers in hand regarding Grogu, and the stage is now set for the future, it will be interesting to see what the next chapter holds for this story. Until next time. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 302 of ‘Ted Lasso’. To revisit the Season Three Premiere, click here.
If there is perhaps one central theme present within the framework of the wondrous Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso, it would have to be… growth. Because over the course of the past three seasons, we have seen everyone in this series grow beyond the person we met in the series premiere. Because this is also a series about life and in life we grow and change as situations present themselves to us, the only question is… do we grow in a healthy manner or a negative manner? And that is why this show has resonated so well with audiences. Because positive growth has been the name of the game for this series, for everyone has used Ted’s cheerful outlook as a springboard to change for the better and become more… and that brings us joy and hope… and that particular aspect of this series is top of mind today, because it presented another critical set of lessons regarding positive growth in its next episode. For ‘(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea’ is a story that examined how we grow in a positive manner when new challenges present themselves in the new chapters of our lives, and the first real storyline of note involving this particular quest involved Keeley. Because despite being the top boss of KJPR, she was consistently running into roadblocks from her investor representative. The kind that involved rules and regulations and really didn’t embody the spirit of KJPR, which was innovation and risk and everything in between. Which is why Keeley was keen to ignore those rules and do whatever needed to be done to keep the real spirit of the company alive. Even going so far as to hire an old friend to help with innovation. Which of course, led to more conflict instead of growth and well, that prompted Keeley to teach the first critical lesson of the evening. For she confronted the investor rep and pointed out what the company stood for, who was the boss and why innovation was critical to this ‘investment’. To remind all of us, that sometimes when we enter a new chapter in our lives, we must confront that which can make us complacent and stunt the journey of growth we are already on, and it was wonderful to be reminded of that lesson and see Keeley hold onto it. However, there was another storyline involving growth, and that revolved around a surprise at AFC Richmond Headquarters. For Trent Crimm (formerly of The Independent) wanted to become part of the club as an observer. For he planned to write a book about the upcoming season and the club and while no one was keen on this idea but Ted, the person that truly took deep issue with it was Roy Kent. Because something about having Crimm present in day-to-day operations, rubbed him the wrong way and being the leader that he is, he demanded that no one speak to someone that he believed would greatly harm the team. Which made little sense since Trent had made it clear that he was more ally than anything else, and he was so shocked by this pushback on Roy’s part… that he even tried to make peace on his own, to no avail, and well… there were no signs that any of this was going to end anytime soon.
Which proved to be problematic during the team’s first game since this order stymied free thought and input from the team when they needed fresh ideas to get goals on the board. That of course prompted Ted to request that Roy quell this… and well… that’s when we learned the origin of this feud and where the next lesson came into play. In that, Crimm once said some hard things about a young Roy Kent’s play. The kind of stuff that got into Roy’s head and haunted him, and that led to the bad blood here because Roy believed that Trent was nothing more than a man that wished to use words to harm. But an apology from Trent and the understanding that both men were in different places now, ended the silent treatment and helped the team to start off their time in the Premier League in a positive manner. But what mattered more, is that Roy’s journey, spoke to how sometimes growth in those new chapters in our lives, involves letting the past go.
As for the final lesson of the episode, well that came via Rebecca. Because the whole soccer world was abuzz over the fact that the world famous Zava had left his current club and was looking for a new one, and of course… that likely meant that Rupert was going to land him and make all the other clubs look the fool, and while at the Chelsea game… she watched her former idiot husband attempt to do just that and well, that awakened something within Rebecca. For she suddenly realized, that unless she did something, anything, to make Rupert look the fool… he would forever have power over her and others and be the egomaniac he has always been. Which is why… she confronted Zava after he spoke with Rupert and called him out for taking the easy way out and chasing the money instead of genuine glory and by appealing to a player’s ego, she did the impossible, and made Zava realize… he should be on the side of the underdog, and he announced his intention to sign with Richmond. Which is a sequence that taught us… that sometimes… punching a bully in the mouth isn’t always possible, nor is there always an easy path to defeating them and their machinations. So instead, we must find new ways to outmaneuver them and wound them… for our own sanity… but also to grow. To be free of the fear they engender within us, and Rebecca did just that and landed quite the player and well… all of these elements made for another wonderful tale from this wonderful series. One that offered up some beautiful life lessons and as always, made us smile, and in the process… turned AFC Richmond into a true contender and now that we’ve reached the end of this wondrous story, we can now turn our attention to what this club is going to look like with a superstar on its roster and the other lessons that this incredible journey is going to send our way. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt At long last, spring is upon us. Which means that the temperatures are finally going to be warmer than the subzero fun we’ve been enduring and of course… we will begin to explore the world again. Through wondrous walks on those sunny and temperate days to just… get the sun we need and to fully enjoy some fresh air and the wonder of nature again. Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Series Premiere of ‘Black Snow’.
There was a time in modern human history, quite recently in fact, where brutal crimes flat out went unsolved. For the people that committed them were savvy in nature and knew exactly how to game the system. Allowing for them to enjoy their freedom and no consequences for their actions while others suffered greatly. For those unfortunate victims either had emotional scars hanging over their head from that dark day, or they were left forever missing a loved one that was brutally harmed by an awful person or persons, who evaded justice because evidence in such matters… was nowhere to be found. But thankfully, those dark days are finally coming to an end. For forensic science has come a long way and the tricks and tips that criminals used to evade capture, have brought them and their crimes into the light. Courtesy of solid DNA evidence and other such scientific wonders that can finally bring forth justice to the fallen and put the offender behind bars where they belong. In fact, this science is so revolutionary, it is changing how we enjoy crime themed stories, and it is even giving rise to tales that revolve around the justice that is conducted when new forensic science solves ancient cold cases that some deemed unsolvable, as evidenced by a new series on Sundance Now. For Black Snow is a show that revolves around a crime in this vein and well… that allows for a powerful and unique series premiere to come to life. Because ‘Unfinished Business’ is an incredibly different kind of crime story. One that revolves around a crime from twenty-five years ago. Wherein a young woman named Isabel Baker was brutally murdered on a calm night after a school event. But there was no supporting evidence to really uncover who committed this heinous crime, so her family and the community did their best to move on. But when the local high school’s time capsule is opened to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the school, the community quickly remembers Isabel. For she wrote a blurb in her contribution to the capsule about how she thought her hometown was filled with monsters and murderers. Which gets the attention of James Cormack. A detective that specializes in cold cases such as these and now… it will be up to him to see if he can crack this long-standing and brutal mystery that has haunted a small community for ages. Which is a supremely refreshing and original plot on its own. Since it is indeed about a cold case and a murder that deserves to be solved because of the brutal nature of it and because there was no justice for Isabel. But what truly allows for this fascinating premiere to deeply draw us into the mystery, is the sheer fact… that it isn’t flashy or edgy. It’s a down home exploration of how death impacts a small community, and how the loss of a life really does create a lasting void that doesn’t fade over time. Making this a supremely human series premiere, one that we can relate to and one that we want to see come to its conclusion. So that there is justice for this poor soul that was at the very beginning of her life and had that robbed from her. But this series compels us further to continue the journey for reasons that go far beyond our need to see evil vanquished. For this is also a series that is clearly going to explore the trauma that people experience from crime and loss, and how one reconciles that decades after it rocked their world. Which means we are in for a supremely intimate and unsettling journey. One that will leave no stone unturned regarding the case and the why behind the murder and… that is going to be incredible to watch. Since it will in essence, thumb its nose at what the crime drama normally stands for and do something exciting and new and you simply cannot go wrong with that, and it will be quite interesting to see what we learn about this case and the people of this town as James digs deep into one ugly cold case, and a troubling past that someone desperately wants the world to forget. Until next time. |
