One common misconception about reality television or docu-series that showcase life as it stands, is that they are vapid in nature and full of nothing but drama from beginning to end. Granted, the early days of reality television featured a lot of that and likely helped to create this misconception about the genre. But if you look at the more modern shows in this vein, they explore so much more. Since they can examine what life is like in a part of the world, we know nothing of, and they provide us with people we relate to, despite a possible gap in our wealth standings, courtesy of moments that are real and that we have experienced or will.

Which is why Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise on Freeform is of note. Because this series accomplishes all of that and continued to plunge us deeper into this world during last night’s two-episode block. For ‘Flirting with Disaster’ and ‘Tequila and Tears’ really dug deep into the lives of the folks we met last week and, in the process, educated us about life on the island. Such as the fact that when it comes living there, everyone knows everyone and because of that… one should carry and conduct themselves in a certain manner. So that there isn’t bad blood or awkward moments and that brought Elizabeth back into the conversation again since some believed she was working to keep her distance from so many while stating she was all about closeness and community.

Which of course, brought forth drama and frustrations abound, the kind that were indeed spicy in nature and conflicted because of the whole Armie Hammer mess. But what mattered more here was that look into life on the island and how intricate it can be, to the point where it seems that everyone is constantly wondering if they’ve made the right romantic choices. Since there was a ton of infidelity here and ton of wandering eyes and echoes of the pain that causes. But it truly seems in an isolated island environment where ‘slim pickings’ exist… this is the romantic mantra. One that brings about heartache, like what happened to Chelsea at the end of this block, where she had to confront the very woman that was once involved with her man.

However, while it was fascinating to see how island life can be so intricate and dramatic because of how isolated it is… there were some bright spots to be found in this tale. After all, Selita spent time in this block, working to find her calling. Which allowed for us to see what she was doing in her down time to find a spark and find a drive for something new, and how nothing seemed to excite her. But once she got back into fashion and assembled that show in record time… we saw that spark within her again. The fire that would hopefully drive her forward and prompt her to chase a true north. Giving rise to the message that the island life can have benefits when it comes to chasing one’s dreams or finding oneself. Because paradise does allow for us to get lost and get loose and that is a healthy way to drift for a bit while one searches for purpose in this crazy journey that is life.

All of which made, for a fascinating pair of episodes. That truly did offer up an in depth look at life in the Caymans. The kind that really did showcase so much and busted so many reality television tropes in the process and allowed for everything that everyone experienced here to feel real. Sure, it might have been a little disjointed since these folks live in actual paradise. But they’re still people, they still hurt, and they want what anyone one else does. They want peace, they want love, true… lasting love… and they also want agency and success and that is what makes this show so engaging. Because we simply want to know if these islanders can find those things in a place that promises dreams will come true… or if we are about to embark on a sobering journey where they learn that paradise is a myth. Until next time.

<![CDATA[‘Lopez vs Lopez’ Recap: ‘Lopez vs Let It Go’]]>Wed, 17 Apr 2024 22:09:50 GMThttps://nerdsthatgeek.com/television/lopez-vs-lopez-recap-lopez-vs-let-it-goWritten by John Edward Betancourt

There is strange belief in our modern world, that once someone commits to recovery from substance abuse, that they will be just fine. Which has some merit to say the least, simply because… they’re obviously putting in the work at that point, and they’re enjoying the spoils of being free of addiction’s grasp. So they must be on the right path, they must be ready to find happiness at every turn. But alas, that’s simply not the case, and nothing more than an easy way to not have to worry about the reality that accompanies this phase of recovery. In that, committed or not, there are not always happy days and joyous epiphanies ahead. Life still goes on, and there are still emotional moments to be had, some of which… come from the fact that one is sober.

For chemicals within the brain are changing, and emotions that were numbed by the power of a drug or other substance… are suddenly present again and that can be a lot for people to deal with. Which means they need a support network, someone who can guide them through the storm. Sometimes, that’s a family member, sometimes… it is a professional and other times… well it’s a special individual that helps us and the person in question understand the need for a professional, as evidenced by the next episode of Lopez vs Lopez on NBC. For ‘Lopez vs Let It Go’ saw George… battling his emotions. For those very reasons mentioned a moment ago, and well… that concerned Mayan greatly, and Rosie as well… and that prompted the two of them to try and find George some help.

On his terms, however. Since Mayan and Rosie knew that taking George to a therapist would be a disaster, so they settled on a Curandero, or healer, if you will. Who was happy to bring George into his very karmic stead. Wherein George learned about letting things go and the wonder of being in a cult. Because Carlos, wasn’t a very good healer. Sure, he had some decent advice to offer, but he just wanted to keep his practice going and wanted to keep the money rolling in for it. So, he made George feel special enough to hand over his savings and offered him a new home within the group’s community. Which Mayan was not good with, and thanks to her efforts and George’s electric personality, he was freed from the cult’s clutches and learned some valuable lessons. Such as the importance of finding the right help, and the need to process and control his emotions. So that he didn’t make rash decisions in the name of his addictive personality.

But of course, George wasn’t made to feel bad for this, for Mayan made it clear that he did take part in help, and that’s huge because it does take willingness to make that happen. Which made for another powerful episode, one that offered up more raw lessons about the tough nature of the road that is recovery. Since it requires the body and mind to re-learn so much. But while that was incredible to watch play out, as has been tradition this season, there was a secondary plot to offer up a respite from the heavier stuff. One where Rosie and Oscar worked together to keep the other house near her free from tenants. A move that mostly worked until a dude named Bryan refused to be scared off. Prompting Rosie to take a stand and well, buy the property outright to have her own peace and quiet or decide on her own tenants.

All of which brought forth another meaningful and amazing episode from this series. One that truly explored a corner of recovery that few shows have, and it also was host to some amazing guest stars since Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong dropped by to play Carlos and Bryan, respectively, and reminded us once again how they are true comedic geniuses. And since this show is all about respect for the legacy of Latin Americans and the comedians that paved the way for this show, the moment at the end where the cast of this show re-enacted ‘Mexican Americans’ with two legends, was the stuff of legend, and put a perfect bow on a perfect episode. For this one featured everything we love about this series. Since it was as smart as can be, relatable and human, and of course… filled to the brim with respect for Latin American culture and two men who helped bring it into the mainstream. Until next time.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 205 of ‘Lopez vs Lopez’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.

Often times, stories that focus on addiction and its recovery process, have a tendency to speed through the healing, and understandably so. Simply because, a vast majority of us don’t understand what goes into coming back from years of addiction… so it is deemed best that a story focus upon the simple aspects of healing and how we make peace with addiction over anything else. All so we find inspiration and perhaps are not confused by too much detail. Which while noble in nature, does the story and the viewer a disservice. Because that route does in fact, detract from the hard realities of recovery, the kind that people do need to take part in, so they can face them bravely and handle them with a measure of confidence and that is why this week’s episode of Lopez vs Lopez is of note.

Simply because ‘Lopez vs Raider Nation’ explored how addiction causes great harm and how much work has to go into repairing the damage it brought forth in a person’s life, and it accomplished such feats… by having George work hard on his eighth step. Which in the world of the Twelve Step Program, involves offering amends to those who suffered the most harm during one’s darkest hours with addiction, and George was tearing all over town to offer those apologies up, and was happy over the fact that he was making peace with his sordid and painful past. But there was one individual who was left out of the apology tour and that bothered Oscar to no end.

Because he was there for some of George’s worst moments, and even took the fall for one of them so George would be okay, and it deeply wounded him that George had not apologized for that. So… he came up with a plan to make it happen. Wherein he would bring George, Momo, and Raul to the Raiders/Chargers game, where he took the fall for his hermano, to prompt George to make amends. But that of course, didn’t work and Oscar was deeply wounded over how little George recalled of that moment, and how he now blamed Oscar for everything. Which in turn, prompted Momo to fill George in on everything that concerned Oscar along with the truth about how that moment went down. Which gave George pause and helped him to understand the real damage his actions caused and how much more work he had to do to properly offer amends, since his memory had a bit of fog, and well… to start that process… he did right by Oscar in one epic manner.

A plot that truly presented in a very raw manner, the impact of substance abuse and how hard the road to recovery can be. Since the bigger picture isn’t always present and that requires more work to make things right. Which is the kind of frank and wondrous explorations we have come to expect from this show and while this was going on, a secret was revealed back home. Because Mayan had concerns about how much time her mom was spending with Quinten, and that prompted her to swing by mom’s place, with Quinten, to discuss the need for Rosie to return to the dating game. But… surprise, surprise… Mayan and Quinten were met at the door by Rosie’s new beau, and that meant Rosie was on the spot and had to explain why she was keeping this a secret from everyone. As it turned out, it was to protect her daughter. To make sure the right man had the honor of meeting her, which was a very sweet sequence to see play out, one that did bring some solid laughs.

Granted, so did George’s story since the whole Raiders game and guest appearance from Marshawn Lynch made for some memorable moments. But laughs aside, this was a brilliant episode through and through, and it truly offered up some incredible observations and moments revolving around the theme at hand. The kind we honestly don’t see in this type of show since sitcoms are all about the funny. But this series has figured out how to add real depth into the mix and for its efforts… people in need of guidance on such matters have it after this episode, and those unsure of how to support someone in recovery are aware now of the honesty it requires and that really does make this an amazing show through and through, one that is as much about life as it is about the laughs. Until next time.

It is definitely safe to say that the Apple TV+ series, For All Mankind, is one of the most captivating science fiction shows to hit the airwaves in years. In large part, because it presents us with one incredible ‘what if?’ scenario, since it has spent four seasons immersed in a world where the United States of America, lost the space race. A storytelling decision that has allowed for the series to explore how that could have moved technological progress forward since the space race became the focus over arms, and of course… it’s also brought forth some philosophical questions about our role in the stars and what it could do for the betterment of our species.

All of which has brought forth accolades and praise for the show and its incredible writing and fans have responded to the brilliance of the show by tuning in passionately and spreading the word of its wonder and of course, we’ve all been patiently waiting to hear if a new season is in the cards, so we can see where this amazing journey takes us next. Which is why today’s announcement is of note. For earlier today Apple TV+ let it be known that the series will receive a fifth season, allowing for us to see what comes next after that bold finale and to enhance that news further, Apple TV+ also announced that this incredible universe is expanding as well.

For it also gave the green light to a new series entitled, Star City. Which will explore how the Soviet Union managed to beat America to the surface of the moon. Both of which are announcements that are wondrous to say the least. Because we really do want to see where this story goes with active colonies and economies out there in the void and well… one cannot go wrong with looking at how the other half would have fared by being first to the moon and to properly offer this epic announcement the justice it deserves, here are all the details on this magnificent news, courtesy of Apple TV+.

‘Following its critically acclaimed fourth season, which has been praised as “the best-written show on all of television” and “superior sci-fi," Apple TV+ today announced that its hit, award-winning space drama series “For All Mankind” has landed a renewal for season five. Additionally, Apple TV+ and “For All Mankind” creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi will expand the “For All Mankind” universe with a brand-new spinoff series, “Star City,” which will be showrun by Nedivi and Wolpert. Both series are produced for Apple TV+ by Sony Pictures Television.

“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of ‘For All Mankind,’” said executive producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi. “The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race. We could not be more excited to continue building out the alternate history universe of ‘For All Mankind’ with our partners at Apple and Sony.”

“With each new season, ‘For All Mankind’ continues to build out a fascinating world and capture global audiences through high quality storytelling that has been so skillfully developed by Ron, Matt and Ben,” said Matt Cherniss head of programming for Apple TV+. “There is so much to explore and, we along with our partners at Sony, can’t wait to dive into this next chapter of the engrossing ‘For All Mankind’ universe.”

A robust expansion of the "For All Mankind” universe, “Star City” is a propulsive paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race - when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward. “Star City” is created by Matt Wolpert, Ben Nedivi, and Ronald D. Moore. Nedivi and Wolpert serve as showrunners and executive produce alongside Moore and Davis of Tall Ship Productions.

Since its global debut, “For All Mankind” has been widely acclaimed as “one of the best shows on television,” and season four holds a perfect 100% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“For All Mankind” is created by Emmy Award winner Moore, and Emmy nominees Wolpert and Nedivi. Wolpert and Nedivi serve as showrunners and executive produce alongside Moore and Maril Davis of Tall Ship Productions, as well as David Weddle, Bradley Thompson, Seth Edelstein and Kira Snyder. “For All Mankind” is produced for Apple TV+ by Sony Pictures Television.

The latest season for “For All Mankind” rocketed the series into the new millennium in the eight years since season three, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards.

All four seasons of “For All Mankind” are now streaming globally on Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment, and is available to watch across all your favorite screens. One particular aspect of life that each and every one of us enjoy and outright cherish… is the lull that takes place in between new chapters in our lives. Because those moments offer clarity, and peace and a real sense of wonder as to what lies ahead. Which are indeed pleasant moments worth holding onto and savoring. But what truly makes us cherish this and love it so, is the sheer fact… that this levity never quite lasts. Simply because, life rolls on, new chapters begin, and old haunts come to bear and we must of course, act accordingly and adjust depending on what comes our way, as evidenced by the next episode of American Rust: Broken Justice on Prime Video.

For ‘Iron Sky’ saw the transitional period that everyone was enjoying, come a close for those very reasons and that led to a fascinating tale for certain. One that saw Billy come to realize… he has a lot of baggage and trauma that will haunt him until he takes the time to resolve it. Mainly because… he went through a gamut of emotion and pain in this story by being reminded of the pain inflicted upon him in jail, alongside the reality that he didn’t deal with what happened in there or what happened in the past, period. Which led to awkward moments, and a supremely scary one as well, involving a familiar item from days gone by. But what mattered more, here, was that Billy’s journey did indeed remind us… how the past can shatter serenity and the explorations on such matters continued from there.

Since Grace journey here, spoke to how new chapters begin. Because just like that… Grace was finally looking at a little financial peace with the deal she brokered, and that gave her a bit of pause and a bit of agency to do more in her community. Such as do her best to expose Sue in the public light to ensure no one else suffered like her Billy, and she even helped out with Del’s case. Since he brought Vic up to the cabin for the weekend to get back the lighter and she stepped in to help with that, which got awkward and gross. But it did speak to how her little moment of silent celebration was over as well and a new chapter awaited her, and that made for one fascinating journey for certain. One that implied that Grace will indeed be searching for more agency and direction in episodes to come.

But of course, this episode also helped to remind us that life goes on and that too can bring forth change and surprise, as evidenced by the darkness looming on the horizon. Because Sue did not survive this episode, in fact, she died after Grace chewed her out. Which brought more suspicion her way since Steve remained convinced Grace was somehow behind this all and continued to investigate accordingly and… Del’s work to bring down the Brotherhood might be in jeopardy thanks to his partner. Since Angela finally raised concerns to Detective Fisher about Vic’s desire to cross a lot of lines with his girlfriend. Which could upend everything he’s working toward, so hopefully… Del can get something out of Vic as this weekend continues along.

In the end, this was simply nothing more than a transitional episode. One that helped to gently bring to close the last emotions and vestiges of wonder surrounding how season one ended so the core explorations of season two can begin, and you really can see that framework here. Since now there are hints of how badly Del wants to atone and how hard that will be for him in every way, and how Grace wants agency and how Billy wants peace. And of course, clearly something shady and slimy is happening here, something that is claiming lives and well, that will absolutely prove to be a big deal in the weeks to come, as will all of these juicy plot threads. For the calm is over and it will be fascinating to see how everyone faces new chapters and yesterday, and life itself… as season two of this fascinating show continues along. Until next time.

<![CDATA[‘Mary & George’ Recap: ‘The Hunt’]]>Mon, 15 Apr 2024 17:35:48 GMThttps://nerdsthatgeek.com/television/mary-george-recap-the-huntWritten by John Edward Betancourt

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Two of ‘Mary & George’. To revisit the Series Premiere, click here.

We are taught at a young age, that if we apply ourselves to a particular goal, we can achieve anything, and it makes sense as to why we are taught that particular lesson. Because our parents, want nothing more than to see us succeed, to become great people that achieve wonders and find peace in life in going after what we want. But what’s fascinating about this lesson, is that we tend to abandon it at a certain age. Courtesy of failure, worry, and the belief that not all goals are attainable. Something that is reinforced by what we see from the people around us. Who see their dreams go the wayside and falter. So… we deem it best to let it go and just accept what comes our way, when we should not.

Because dreams only go the wayside when we pour worry into them and if we give agency to failure. But if we learn from those missteps and forge ahead with the same determination, wonders will come our way and for proof… look no further than the next episode of Mary & George on STARZ. Because ‘The Hunt’ picked up shortly after George was humiliated in court with the King, and well… he and his mother had two paths to choose from following such failure. In that, they could see this grand plan to court the King and seduce him, as foolish and outlandish, and a failure and drop it accordingly. Or… stick with it, learn from it, and just go for it and get what they wanted and they of course… chose the latter after some quick housekeeping and accomplished wonders.

Granted there were still missteps along the way. After all, the first real attempt to get into the King’s court was met with more humiliation for George, courtesy of his second muddy bath. But that prompted he and his mother to speak with their contact to outline a better plan. One that truly did get George in front of the King, but even then… setbacks and roadblocks stood in the way of Mary and George’s ultimate goal. Since Somerset was relentless in trying to humiliate and harm George and Mary even found herself under fire for her past, and for her new romantic discretions here. Since her contact was eager to learn about her true identity and use it for leverage since she was so close to having so much. But those problems… didn’t totally matter in the end.

Because this duo really did continue to believe, they could achieve anything with a little determination. Which was why Mary worked with her new lover to poison her contact and remove him and his muscle from the equation. Which didn’t quite end as smoothly as Mary might have liked, since the muscle lived and dropped off some pertinent paperwork. But it was enough to keep Mary’s secrets at bay and keep her status in the community untouched, and as for George… well… his continued perseverance paid off as well. Since the King finally decided to give into the temptation and sexual energy that George sent his way. Allowing for intimacy and a new chapter to take place for George. One that will finally allow him and his mother to be close to the most powerful man in the world at the time.

In fact, Mary’s troubles may be nullified by the fact that her son is now the apple of the King’s eye. But while we wait to see how this newfound lust affair plays out, we can celebrate one smart tale. One that really did offer up a positive lesson in the wildest and most unique way possible. Because this writer is hard pressed to think of another story that hammered home that nugget of truth by way of a story that featured murder, mayhem, and wanton lust. But this one achieved that no problem, and it does deserve a round of applause for doing so. Since that does inform us, to make sure we chase our goals in an honest manner, so we aren’t surrounded by chaos and fury. But all that aside, what matters most… is that Mary and George have indeed reached the top and infiltrated the King’s Court and it will be interesting to see what they have planned for themselves and others… with the King’s heart now firmly affixed to his new beau. Until next time.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Three of ‘Parish’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.

When we last settled in to enjoy the fascinating new AMC series, Parish, the situation was quite grim. After all, Gray Parish was under fire from forces unknown and those very forces trashed his prized vehicle and left the Horse bleeding in the middle of a cemetery with seemingly no hope of survival for anyone. All because, Gray once again committed to his darker demons and surrounded himself with a life he left behind in the hopes of feeling or finding direction again. Leaving all of us to wonder what lie ahead for Gray with such trouble surrounding him, and thankfully, this week’s episode of this magnificent series wasted no time in letting us know… that what lie ahead was more heartache for Gray… courtesy of an act of kindness designed to offer a little self-healing.

For ‘Sanctuary’ opened up with the revelation that the Horse, did not die of his wounds, nor did the dark forces surrounding him bear down upon the trio. No instead, the firefight caught the attention of the police and that spooked these men, giving Gray a chance to grab the Horse, and his son, Luke, and move them to a nearby church. Where an old friend waited for him, one that could do some medical work and keep the Horse alive long enough to get him home and get him proper care. But of course, that was no easy task in the interim. In large part thanks to the Horse himself. Who was weary of whom to trust and bled more because of it and well… that’s when we came to understand that Gray didn’t just save this mysterious and troublesome man for the sake of lessons regarding our better angels… but because of a dynamic he saw in front of him that troubled him.

Because Luke was terrified of losing his father and was collapsing emotionally because of it, and well, that brought back echoes of PTSD and trauma for Gray. Who thought of his own loss, and of the damage that little Luke would experience psychologically by losing his dad. The same kind he experienced by losing his son. So, he pleaded with his friend, with her other fellow nuns to offer grace, offer healing, so that young boy would find salvation and hope. Which truly was the perfect way to explore the core conflict for Gray, and how he is using this harrowing adventure to heal his own wounds when in fact, the only person that can do that… is Gray. And well… his selfish needs, while noble in nature, did indeed set the stage for trouble down the line and of course, gave rise to serious impact upon others in his life. Because while Gray was trying to save the Horse from the end of his life, Gray’s family, and others… were deeply suffering.

Mainly because, Gray was missing, and that put fear into the hearts of Rose and Michaela. For they had no idea if Gray was alive, dead, or just plain missing. Which prompted discussions with the police, and a search from Rose for any clues regarding Gray’s whereabouts, and the mysterious new client she had heard of. Which instead exposed the very trauma that Gray was experiencing and hinted at the possibility that Gray’s return to this world was also grounded in the desire to perhaps use connections there to punish whoever harmed his son. Making his journey even darker since there is no catharsis in revenge, in fact, eye for an eye would only damage his psyche further. But that aside, this spoke to the core conflict as well, and made for powerful television. As did Colin’s journey, since we came to learn his beloved was laying down roots with his own brother and that too, put him in a world of hurt.

But while it was powerful to explore these elements and dig into the power and impact of trauma, this is still a crime drama at heart and there was more to explore in that regard as well. Courtesy of the Tongas in part, since Shamiso took charge here regarding the attack and its fallout, since Zenso was content to stay pat and revel in the business, and her work and the story in general… revealed that a powerful man named Anton was behind the attack and wanted the Tongas out of the picture. And he will be a big part of the picture going forward. Because the job wasn’t done, and one of his men was captured by Gray when they came looking for trouble, since Gray did save Shepherd and get him home. Which prompted Anton… to just pay the Parish residence a visit and say hello, and that is undoubtedly going to lead to discomfort and consequences.

All because once again, Parish is reveling in his pain, and has made that the focus of his life at this point in time. So, there will be consequences, plain and simple… the kind that will undoubtedly lead to more heartache and pain in his household and likely put him at a crossroads. Wherein Parish must decide to heal… or sink further. But while we wait to see what he decides, we can revel in one powerful episode. One that was as intense as they come and featured some amazing performances. Especially from Giancarlo Esposito. Who just unleashed a gamut of powerful emotions for us to experience, reminding us why he is one of the best in the business, and we will likely get more of that as the pressure increases. Courtesy of what will undoubtedly be a proper introduction of Anton, when this brilliant series returns to the airwaves next week. Until then.

When we are down in life, and reeling from failure over obtaining a goal that means the world to us… we immediately want nothing more… than to get back on track. Because the power of that goal or that dream does continue to call to us, despite our misstep or missteps and the best way to forget about it and find purpose and direction is to get back on the horse and go for it. But even that… comes with its own set of challenges. Because sometimes, our failure was rough enough, that we need a minute to make sure we’re mentally ready to get back on the horse. So, we don’t doubt or collapse in our quest to get back to form. Which means the best way to get back into the thick of it, is small wins, as evidenced by the next episode of BMF on STARZ.

A feat that ‘Get ‘em Home’ accomplished by having Terry and Meech fight for some victories in their respective worlds. For Meech, that involved imparting wisdom and leadership into his growing St. Louis chapter of the business. Simply because J-Pusha’s little brother was kidnapped by some stupid dealers who wanted better product and lost wages in exchange for his safety. Which prompted a march to war for J-Pusha and that… did not sit right with Meech. Because he knew it would bring bloodshed and chaos to the streets and stop the business before it started. So, he used his leadership skills and experience, and common sense, to bring everything to peace. A move that reinforced the need for baby steps on the way back to the top. Since this helped Meech find confidence and direction again.

As for Terry, well his way back to the top involved stealth. Because he had seen enough death and destruction to last him for quite a while, so rather than deal with all-out war from a resurgent and aggressive Henri, he opted to cut her off at her knees. Which involved offering up a ridiculous price to dealers working with Henri, to have them join BMF. So that BMF’s product was the only product on the streets in the D and his plan quickly took hold. Since she had no dealers left by the end of this tale. Giving Terry a huge win and a push toward finding his own groove and own success, through baby steps, and he wasn’t the only one that went after Henri slowly. For Bryant and Jin were eager to work their own case, in the hopes of bringing her down and playing the heroes.

All of which, was the perfect way to explore the central theme, and that did indeed teach us plenty about how we get back on top when we are wounded emotionally. But of course, this is a very intimate season of the show, one that is taking the time to explore the interpersonal conflicts rolling about and that was present here too. Since Lucille was further torn by the love triangle surrounding her. Because thrills and comfort are hard to juggle. Not to mention, Markisha was making Terry’s attempts to find balance in his family life quite difficult. Because she truly wanted to be respected and be part of the family. But couldn’t find her way in. So, she did her best to make Terry as thirsty as can be, to enjoy the thrill of being chased, when in fact, great trouble may come from this. After all, a cop is part of this little game and that’s not something Terry needs in his life right now.

In the end however, this was just, another amazing episode from this series. Simply because it once again reminded us of how dedicated it is, to showing us an authentic rise to power. The kind where emotions come into play and where it does take time to build a powerhouse empire, and seeing baby steps come into play, the kind that healed the Flenory brothers and built their confidence… was the perfect way to continue to make that happen. And now that Terry and Meech are back on track and ready to take the next step back to prominence, it will be interesting to see how their newfound confidence is going to help them move their business forward at this critical juncture in BMF’s fascinating history. Until next time.

<![CDATA[‘Sugar’ Recap: ‘Shibuya Crossing’]]>Sat, 13 Apr 2024 22:54:00 GMThttps://nerdsthatgeek.com/television/sugar-recap-shibuya-crossingWritten by John Edward Betancourt

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Three of ‘Sugar’. To revisit the Series Premiere, click here.

There are a great many elements that go into making a truly magnificent mystery television series. For starters, the show needs to have a dynamic and fascinating lead investigator. Someone that is intelligent and thoughtful and the audience can connect with. Plus, they need to be shockingly good at their job, so there is a sense of awe surrounding their journey. And of course, they need to handle some tough cases that keep us guessing. But above all, the show must do more than engage us with a good mystery. It has to captivate us, shock us and truly send our imagination racing at the possibilities and this is why the new Apple TV+ series, Sugar, is of note.

Simply because this show harbors all of those elements, since John Sugar is all of those things, we must know more about Olivia’s case and well… this week’s episode added that extra layer of mystery we just made mention of. One that truly has us guessing a day later. A feat that ‘Shibuya Crossing’ accomplished, by offering up a bevy of answers regarding why Olivia has gone missing. Which John came to learn, through a harrowing encounter with the men that barricaded themselves in Teresa’s home. For they also baited Melanie there as well, and after he rescued everyone, he came to discover… that the leader of the merry band of thugs that brought forth trouble, a fellow named Stallings, wanted information about Clifford. Who as it turned out, died at the hands of Olivia for bringing harm to Carmen and Melanie of course… helped Olivia hide any evidence of her crime and just like that… Olivia was gone.

Which of course, doesn’t answer any questions regarding her whereabouts or why she is still radio silent. But this did offer up a bigger picture, a messy one no less. But with Stallings licking his wounds and with some truth in hand, John was able to enjoy a little downtime with Ruby and other cohorts in his business. Which brought about… grand mystery surrounding John and his job really. Because this collection of private investigators, enjoyed some very unique and strange interactions with one another, wherein they expressed how they were all deeply obsessed with quality sleep and the human condition. Not to mention, they kept diaries that Ruby reviewed with them, and well… lots of questions came out of this. Such as who they are, why they exist and why there needs to be a network of them in this life.

Not to mention… we now have a lot of questions regarding, where Ruby’s loyalties lie. Because she was in a hurry in this story to keep all secrets regarding Stallings deeply buried beneath the sands of the Earth. And she wanted to steer John clear of him, even though he is clearly related to the very case that John is invested in. Which of course, brings more questions to bear and truly engages us like never before. Because this writer is hard pressed to think of another private investigator story where this kind of strange society of them existed, and where a support network did the opposite, and all of that is worth the price of admission for this episode, and truly tasks you to continue the journey and see what lies ahead. Well, that, and the ending of this tale, as well.

Mainly because Davy and Kenny went the extra mile to uncover some truth about Sugar. Even going so far as using romantic connections to a member of the government to learn about him and hopefully use that to their advantage. Which should have added for real tension, since these men were headed to Arizona to meet with John’s mother. But with the shocking revelation that John is part of something bigger, one must wonder if they’ll find nothing or a dark surprise. But while we wait to learn more, we can celebrate one brilliant tale. Because just like that… we are deeply engaged in John’s journey and his secrets and the world that surrounds him and that really has made this, a wonderful watch from the get-go and it truly does have us counting down the minutes to next week’s tale. So, we can see what other surprises and revelations await us, from one refreshing mystery series. Until next time.
