This is a spoiler-free recap of the season finale of ‘Pantheon’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
It is definitely safe to say that the AMC+ series, Pantheon, is the smartest science fiction show of 2022. Simply because this series has offered up some powerful commentary on so many topics. Our collective fear of death, our desire to thrive beyond it. And of course, what it means to be human, and what it means to let our technology rule the day. Which has made for some powerful storytelling for certain, the kind that has left us hanging on every word and left us on the edge of our seats. Especially when it comes to the fact that this power is in many ways, in the wrong hands at this point of the story. But that many themes do beg the question… what is the overall point that this series wants to make?Because that’s a lot to chew upon and that’s a lot to explore and how on earth do you bring all those themes together to wrap up such an epic story? Well as it turns out, this series did find a way to do just that. For the season finale of this saga, ‘The Gods Will Not Be Slain’, used some epic moments involving Katie and David and Chanda, and some poignant ones involving Caspian to inform us of what this series really wanted to explore. In that, we are all acutely aware of the fact that technology is a juggernaut right now and that human beings are using it for their own gain and that we don’t seem to be keeping pace with its development emotionally, which is terrifying and concerning. Since that should indeed lead to the potential disasters we saw in this finale, and that means that there might not be any hope for us in the slightest. Not when men like Chanda and companies like Logorhythms exist in our world. But how this story ended and the wonder we saw take place in the process… made it clear that this series really wanted to hammer home the point… that the answers to our worries and our concerns have been in front of us all along. In that, we don’t demand enough of the technology sector, regarding transparency. We just feed the machine so to speak and demand more of what we fear, when in fact… we can slow it down, we can ask for more and we can help to dictate what people need. Not to mention, our belief that evil will take these revolutions and use them for nefarious purposes is also unfounded. Because we always forget, there are guardians out there, and people that want evil to be defeated and they work to keep it that way and maintain balance and in doing so… remind us of our capacity for good. Which has always prevailed even during the darkest or most trying times, and this is a story that also subtly spoke to the fact… that our fears are also what keep us from heading into the brink. Since they drive us to be better and be more and to accomplish wonders so that we as a species do eventually rise. Which may seem like too many themes to put forth… it’s not. Because all of these points actually do bring the story together because they remind us that the human condition is shared and unique and when we hold to that and celebrate it, we unify, and we conquer and make our world a better place. If anything, this show should be applauded for offering up a complex finale to a complex series, since it speaks to the fact that this story didn’t want to shy away from the big questions it posed and the big problems it explored. It wanted to be as complex and as simple as our own world, so that everyone was able to extract the answer that means the most to them, so they can apply it to their lives and their own worries and well, one does have to wonder if there will be more to this story or not. Because this in some ways serves as a brilliant series finale, one that reflects the sometimes-teetering nature of the world perfectly… but there is room for more, and it would be wonderful if AMC+ commissioned another season of this brilliant series. So, we can once again be left in awe of a story that held nothing back in its quest to really explore the messy beauty of the human condition. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Six of ‘Andor’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
One particularly violent act that we tend to romanticize in popular media, is revolution, and understandably so. After all, this is… a big event. Where the good people of an oppressed nation rise up and fight back and earn their freedom and a new way forward. So naturally, we should celebrate that since more often than not, they end in a better tomorrow for everyone. But as time goes on and the advent of technology continues to tie us into the world in ways, we never thought possible, we are coming to learn… that the fight for freedom isn’t filled with flags and triumphant music and heroes staring into the battlefield and dreaming of what will be. No instead, it is a violent and harrowing act, one that is both costly and terrifying. Which is why this week’s episode of Andor on Disney+ is of note. Simply because, for the first time ever, the Star Wars saga opted to explore that in realistic detail for a change. Which is fascinating and important since this saga has at times, romanticized the Rebellion. But this franchise is also growing up and getting with the times and that made for one powerful and devastating tale. One that was a masterclass in tension building as well. For the fight for Imperial cash in ‘The Eye’ wasn’t quick and swift. No instead, our heroes had to earn every credit and they were forced to stand amongst the enemy and witness their indignities toward the natives on Aldhani before getting their chance to finally go for gold. Which is where the ugly came into play. Because in order to get what they needed, they had to take hostages, including a senior officer’s family and they of course, had to strike fear into every Imperial in the docking bay, so that they could have their money and they even had to kill when things went south. Which made it clear how ugly rebellion is and while that alone could have carried this episode, it made sure to hammer the point home further… by bringing death into the mix. For not everyone made it out of this mission alive and some died badly, and even after the money was freed from Imperial hands, little joy was to be found. For Skeen wanted to just take half and go, and paid the ultimate price for treachery, and even Cassian wasn’t sure he wanted to do much more with the Alliance. Largely because, he understood the sacrifices ahead, the bloodshed and the pain. But of course, something will change his mind down the line. But thankfully… this episode wasn’t all gloom and doom. For this is a story that made sure to point out that while rebellion is indeed a scary and horrifying and brutal act… it does have merit. For it will spark fear in the heart of the oppressor, as evidenced by the Imperial response and concern in this tale, and of course… it does inspire hope. Since Mon Mothma quietly celebrated a swift strike against their foe and Luthen… well he was simply over the moon. Because it meant at last, that more people would rise up against the Empire and fight for their freedom and well, we know how this story ends. If anything, this was just… a brilliant episode when all is said and done. Simply because we were likely witness to the genesis of the wider Rebellion here. And we were treated to it in a shockingly realistic and horrifying manner. Because this episode was just brutal and human and everything we could have wanted from a series about the early days of the Rebellion and well… now that the first and decisive blow has been made against Palpatine’s living nightmare, it will be interesting to see what comes next for the Rebel alliance and what will make Cassian Andor, a hero and leader in the cause that will indeed, one day free the galaxy from tyranny. Until next time. This episode sees Jenny’s past finally catching up with her. After expressly forbidding her mother, Gigi, from running her gold mine grift in Montana, a dead body on the Mooney brothers’ ranch leads Jenny to realize that her mother must be in town. Gil Mooney is dead after trying to get revenge on the people who scammed him out of his money using a gold mine ruse. The moment Ivan Mooney mentions Starlight Mining, a look of knowing flashes over Jenny’s face. The scheme he describes is her mother’s signature grift. After confirming Ivan’s innocence in his brother’s death, Beau learns from Jenny that she found a record for a guy arrested under suspiciously similar circumstances in Idaho with Jenny’s mom. Beau and Jenny head to the motel where Gigi always stays when she’s in town, and sure enough, there she is. Gigi seems thrilled to see Jenny, while Jenny is wary and repeatedly demands to know what brings her to town this time. Gigi claims she is there for revenge, as the man she was arrested with in Idaho, Harold Gardiner, has stolen her life savings and taken her grift. Despite Jenny’s warnings prior to their meeting, Beau offers to work with Gigi to catch Harold though Jenny clearly doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Despite Jenny’s valiant efforts to remain cold and skeptical towards her mom and her reappearance, Gigi appears at Jenny’s door that night and sweet talks her way in. Her mom makes her pineapple dump cake, an old family favorite, and plies her with sweetly reminiscent stories over dessert and a bottle of wine. Things seem to be going swimmingly the next day for Beau and Jenny as they pose as a newlywed couple looking to make an investment. They meet with Harold, receive his pitch, sign the contracts and hand over the money. As they shake hands, Beau and Jenny make their arrest. There is a struggle between Beau and Harold’s muscle, but Jenny and Beau are shortly able to gain the upper hand. No sooner than things seem handled, bullets begin to whiz about the place causing chaos. Ivan has shown up seeking pay back for his brother’s murder. Beau races outside after Ivan while Jenny pursues Harold to the roof. More struggling ensues, but Jenny apprehends Harold again. As she zip-ties his hands, he recognizes her as Gigi’s daughter and assumes that Gigi’s put her up to this. “Gigi always comes out on top, doesn’t she?” he laughs. A look of dread washes over Jenny’s face and she races back inside to find the $30 grand in cash issued to her by the county is gone. Her mother has played them.
Jenny and Beau find Gigi’s hotel room vacated, Jenny’s in disbelief, not at her mom’s actions but the fact that she fell for her lies again. Beau assures Jenny, they’ll get her, but Jenny is despondent.
Meanwhile, at camp, things are getting more and more complicated for Sunny. Her attempts to keep Walt hidden from the world are compromised by the disappearance of Paige, who has not made it back to camp. Emily isn’t the only camper suspicious of Luke and his story. Despite his becoming completely lost in the woods, he claims Paige simply decided to go home. His unlikely story is backed by Sunny, who reports that Paige’s things are no longer in her tent. Of course, it was Sunny who removed them, not Paige. Sunny pays a visit to Walt at his place and instructs him to move the body of Mark, the missing hiker, much farther away. Walt tries to comply, but while transporting Mark’s body, the engine of his ancient Suburban blows and he is forced temporarily to the side of the road. Who else should encounter him but Cassie and Denise, on their way to the hiking trails to check a hunch of Cassie’s regarding the missing hiker. Sunny is livid when she returns to see Walt and learns what had transpired. She tells Walt that he is a disappointment. Speaking of disappointment, we see Gigi knock on a door marked private, carrying the bag of money she stole from Jenny. Tonya and Donno greet her, and she steps inside. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Two of ‘Jungle’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
We like to believe that in our modern world, that a human being hunting another human being for nefarious reasons is something that is beyond our capacity. After all, this is the 21st Century, where that kind of behavior shouldn’t exist in the slightest. Especially with technology’s power surrounding us since the police would and should be easily able to close in upon and stop anyone making that kind of attempt. But we often forget that we look at the world through rose-colored glasses and forget there are segments of our world where the everyday rules don’t apply, and where something as heinous as an illegal manhunt can and does happen… as evidenced by the events of the next episode of Jungle on Prime Video. For when we caught up with Gogo in ‘No Matter the Cost’, he came face to face with 6ix when attempting to sell the watch to Mia, and in that moment… it became clear how such a hunt could come to fruition. For despite having the cops near him and 6ix during their discussions about what happened to 6ix’s brother… it was made clear that Gogo was going to be watched and tracked and hunted regardless of the potential for jail time for the hunters. Because in this underworld and undoubtedly others… there’s no concern for the law, just a desire to have justice come to life at any cost, and not justice in the traditional sense since that can be so slow… we’re talking about street justice here. That final justice if you will. A reality that pushed Gogo to really up his timetable to get the hell out of dodge and that brought him back into Slim’s stead to try and get his money at last. An act that went nowhere of course, since Slim is Slim and expects everyone and everything to abide by his terms. Which in turn, pushed Gogo to get in with some new criminals locally, who could help him pull off some the bigger heists that he and Slim were waiting to take part in. All so that he could get the goods from those places and collect that cash so he and his love at last could escape and well… while that plan worked and helped him and his new cohorts get their hands on an incredible gold dust bounty, the hunt was on in the streets and that led to some unsettling moments for certain. Because Slim’s right-hand man, promised his boss that he would do whatever was necessary to bring Gogo to him. And of course, get that fascinating watch back in Slim’s hands. Which allowed for us to see how a modern manhunt can indeed take place from a technology standpoint. Since there were phone calls galore to the various gang members of the city, including 6ix, just to get the word out that Gogo was on Slim’s radar and of course… the interconnected nature of the world via technology, allowed for information to be shared with ease. Since he was able to discover Gogo’s home address through various conversations, including one with his new cohorts. Which of course, put Gogo in serious danger, to the point where he’s ready to go on the run with Jessica and find a safer place to live for a beat, since he’s aware that others have found where he hangs his hat. But while we wait to see what comes of that, we can bask in the wonder of another fascinating chapter in this story. One that pointed out how our sophistication as a society, combined with the darkness that still thrives, has enhanced dark acts we thought were gone forever and well, it will be fascinating to see how technology and guile work together to bring forth more lessons and pain for Gogo as this incredible series continues along. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
It has been quite the interesting year for television shows. In that, we are seeing a lot of shows enter the end game for their story across multiple networks. Some shows are of course, wrapping their story up quickly after only a handful of seasons, to properly tell their story and end on their own terms while others… are grand franchises that are finally preparing to say goodbye after years of entertaining us through and through and it just so happens, that the latter of those two types of endings is the focus of our discussion today. Simply because a beloved and long running franchise is about to bid farewell to the airwaves after decades of entertaining audiences.
For Monday will bring forth the first two episodes of the final season of the highly acclaimed and loved show, Doc Martin. Yes, you read that right… the time has finally come for this series to close out and give Martin the closure we’re not sure he or the audience ever really wanted. But all good things must indeed come to their end whether we like it or not and well, we here at NTG had the distinct honor of receiving some early access to the final season of this series and we thought it would be worthwhile today to spend a little time previewing what you can expect from Doctor Martin Ellingham’s farewell tour, in a spoiler-free manner of course. Because it would be mean to reveal all the surprises, but what we can tell you… is that the writing and the character development in this final season… are simply top notch. Since Martin’s big decision from the prior season, the one revolving around his status as a doctor, is indeed addressed here in a manner that is supremely powerful and dynamic. Which will finally allow for Martin to understand the course of his life and who and what want he wants to be professionally, and personally. Which makes for some incredible moments revolving around Martin, the kind that engage us like never before as we see him grow and learn before our eyes and the best part is, the wonder of this final season goes beyond incredible writing and growth. For in the midst of taking the time to explore corners of Martin’s psyche that we’ve never really delved into before, the show makes a point to stay true to its roots. Which means once again we spend a fair chunk of time with the good people of Portwenn and explore their lives and their needs, which allows for delightful breaks from the heavier moments that Martin is dealing with and of course… the comedic chops of this series haven’t dulled in the slightest. Since there are plenty of perfectly timed jokes and quirky moments for us to enjoy, which keeps the viewer comfortable and in familiar territory and that… oddly helps one to reconcile the reality that the end is nigh for this series. Because it just feels as though we are dealing with business as usual, and that’s probably a good thing. So that we don’t find ourselves tearing up over the fact that the end awaits us, we can just kick back and enjoy a show we love while watching Martin tackle new challenges, the kind that the cast sell incredibly well here, with Martin Clunes of course, leading the charge, and he also turns in some of his finest work as an actor. Likely because he too knows that the audience deserves a show’s absolute best when it bids farewell, and the best news of all… is we don’t have to wait that much longer to enjoy one last adventure with this iconic character. For the final season of Doc Martin gets underway on Monday, October 17, 2022, on Acorn TV, and we can’t wait to for you to enjoy the beginning of Martin’s long and winding goodbye. As an added bonus, please enjoy the final trailer for the final season of 'Doc Martin'. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 506 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. This article also features mention of sexual assault, which may be triggering to some individuals.
When we last settled in to discuss the brilliant Hulu series, The Handmaid’s Tale, we were left with concern in our hearts. After all, the daring mission that June and Luke took part in to garner more knowledge on Gilead’s inner workings, ended in disaster. With what appeared to be Guardians from Gilead chasing them through No Man’s Land before capturing them at last and pushing them toward a future unknown. One where it seemed they were headed toward Gilead, which would have brought forth all kinds of horrible consequences for June and dark times for Luke and the worry that came from that was thankfully quelled during this week’s episode of the series. In large part because, ‘Together’ informed us… that our heroes weren’t in as bad of a place as we thought they were. For this episode revealed that while they were taken to a facility for processing in a manner similar to how Gilead does business… they weren’t dealing with Gilead. At least, not in the traditional sense. Sure, these guys looked like Guardians and acted like them too, but the fact that June and Luke were transported in a grimy van and placed in grimy cages… didn’t feel like Gilead. Allowing for this duo to take a moment to breathe and think, and oddly enough for June to play mentor to Luke. Since he had never been in this situation before and needed guidance on how best to deal with the horrors of being trapped in a cage. But what mattered more was that for the moment, they were safe and free from harm and while they just waited for something to happen… this episode kicked into overdrive elsewhere in the world to offer us some huge surprises. For instance, in Gilead, quite the revelation came to light regarding Esther. In that, she was pregnant, and exactly three weeks along no less. Which left Aunt Lydia concerned since that was the day of Commander Waterford’s funeral, and also a day before Esther was officially named as the Putnam’s new Handmaid. And when pressed about how on earth Esther could be pregnant before her posting and the ceremony, Lydia came to learn that Putnam raped her during his private meeting with her in his study. A revelation that surprisingly, pushed Aunt Lydia to call for action. Which she did indeed do with Commander Lawrence in a manner that felt more grounded in humanity than policy, once again hinting at some kind of change in Lydia. But before she could press harder regarding punishment, she was sent back to deal with the girls. After all, in Gilead… the men can do whatever they want, and sadly, when word spread that Putnam had indeed been ‘blessed’ with another pregnancy, his status began to climb, and he continued to flex his muscles. To the point where he put Lawrence in his place and hinted at future changes to Lawrence’s life and well… he wasn’t having that. Because change needed to come to Gilead in his mind and he was sympathetic to Lydia’s concerns. For what Putnam did was monstrous and disgusting and should have received some kind of punishment and well, Lawrence figured out a way to use Gilead against its own. For the law of the Lord is the law of the land and bringing Putnam’s actions to the high court’s attention allowed for Putnam to be executed for sins of the flesh. Giving Lawrence and Nick a huge win, one that might help them implement change after all.
However, while that alone was a giant shocker for certain… this episode had more surprises in mind for us. Such as how Serena Waterford, once one of the most powerful women in Gilead… was now relegated to prisoner status, officially. Since she came to learn there was a full medical facility in the Wheeler home so she wouldn’t leave its walls, and as time went on, Mrs. Wheeler barked orders at her and told her how best to nurture her unborn child. Not to mention… she was even being pressed to date and potentially marry her doctor and that… put Serena at her lowest. For she was in essence, akin to a Handmaid here, one that didn’t have to deal with the indignity of the Ceremony mind you but had as many rights none the less. Which left her in a broken place and us in a satisfied one and she was so horrified and without purpose that she demanded to take part in a special opportunity when it arose.
In that, Commander Wheeler revealed that he was the one responsible for capturing June near the border, and that he had men out there who would take high value targets putting about and send them back to Gilead. But for June, he had something special in mind. In that, his lackey would go out there and kill her properly, and that of course was something Serena needed to be part of in some capacity. To experience a sense of justice for Fred and shockingly she was allowed to come along on the trip. Which led to one harrowing and equally as stunning moment. Wherein Serena herself pointed a gun at June before turning it on her escort and firing, and then demanded that June drive her off into the world. So that she could experience some freedom and agency at last and well… that is where this story ends, one that was… outstanding to say the least. Because this is a story that while harrowing at times… offered happy endings for the heroes and nothing but punishment for the wicked. Since Luke was sent back to Canada and June is still alive while Putnam paid the price for his disgusting nature and potentially handed over the keys to the kingdom in the process. Since Lawrence and Nick might have great power now, the kind that could slowly dismantle Gilead and that’s not a bad thing by any means. Because it needs to end. But what matters most here, is that Serena finally got a genuine taste of the horror she herself has helped put countless women through, and truly… it will be interesting to see if she’s had an actual change of heart about Gilead and how it looks at women, or if this is just another attempt at survival when this powerhouse series returns next week. Until then. Written by John Edward Betancourt

Reaching audiences on screens small or large, on platforms digital or traditional, Jigsaw aims to achieve critical and commercial success without sacrificing style or authenticity.
