Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘Shantaram’. To revisit the series premiere, click here.
When we last settled in to discuss the fascinating Apple TV+ series, Shantaram, we talked at length about how the show did a phenomenal job of world-building and exploring some fundamental facts regarding the show’s main character, Dale aka Lin Ford. Specifically, how Lin is a man that desperately wants a fresh start in life and a second chance to be a better man after being involved in a bank robbery and prison break… but also that he isn’t making any quantifiable or fundamental strides toward becoming that man, and well… speaking to that foundation for the character is imperative to revisit today, simply because the show explored it further in a fascinating manner in its next episode. For now, that Lin was settled into Sagar Wada, he had time to think and ponder in ‘Bad Medicine’. About the choices he had made to this point and what a fresh start here would look like since he was now staying here and becoming the village doctor and well… that quiet time allowed for the viewer to learn just how desperate he really is for that fresh start. Because the past and the robbery truly haunts Lin to the core of his soul and while that does indeed fuel him to be a better man and be more in this life, it is also pushing him to try and resolve his concerns in a hap hazard and prompt manner to not feel the pain. As evidenced by the interesting but also uplifting deeds that he committed to in this particular tale. For he also took the time to accompany his patients to the hospital and hustle and push to get medical supplies to save them from illness, and when that didn’t produce what he needed, he got creative in his quest to put together a functional clinic. In that, he partnered up with Mr. Kahn and his associates and networks to get those supplies, and he even braved illness and stigma in doing so. Since his future supplier was a colony of lepers in the city. All so that he could bring about joy and hope and while that did indeed remind us of the fact that Lin is a good man, the fundamental problem here is that he is hoping that a bevy of good deeds will wipe away his sins and cleanse his soul and give him peace and that just won’t happen, sadly. For what is really the issue here is that Lin has not and seemingly will not deal with the fundamental root causes that brought him to this point, and until he does... everything here is just a quick bandage on an ugly wound. But what was equally as fascinating about this tale, is the sheer fact that Lin in essence, doesn’t know what to do to heal or how to get there and it makes sense as to why. After all, this is 1982. Where mental health and growth were seen as forms of weakness, so men like Lin just forged ahead and hoped for the best and to complicate matters further… he’s digging himself a deeper hole of trouble by somehow thinking that being cool with Mister Khan will somehow bring himself and others along to the proverbial light side, and that such a redemption will somehow heal him. When in reality, Khan and his friends and associates, don't care about Lin's push to heal or make his new home a great place. They are working against Sagar Wada and see Lin as nothing more than a handy asset that they will eventually manipulate and make use of in their own special way. Which is what brings forth the drama in this tale and helps set the stage for what feels like a grand tragedy of sorts. One where a decent man that’s made some honest mistakes and wants to atone for them… cannot. Due to his desperation to grasp at peace instead of finding out how to actually obtain it, and that made this episode, gripping and compelling and powerful. Since it covered all of those points in a masterful and engaging manner and of course, left us wanting more. For we are all now curious… if a fresh start will ever be in the cards for Lin, one where he is truly able to embrace that which he seeks and it will be fascinating to see if real change can come to Lin’s life, or if this segment of his time in Bombay is nothing more than a way station to a tragic purgatory. Until next time. Written by Zeke Perez Jr.
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 204 of ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Coaches and players fall into opposing sides of the showdown between talent and teamwork in this week’s episode of Game Changers, as player rankings lock, and the EPIC camp’s tournament draft takes place. Both the rankings and the impending tournament have been at the center of conflict and an intense draft finally creates a clear dividing line through friendships, relationships, teammates, and coaches. Coach Cole and Coach Alex have been at odds all season, disagreeing about how the campers should be trained, about the intensity of camp, and even about how kids’ summers should be spent. While Coach Cole hasn’t been malicious in his treatment of the campers, he is definitely a perfectionist who prioritizes talent and expects elite effort. Coach Alex, off of a championship with an imperfect but scrappy Ducks team, places emphasis on flying together over individual skill. The two coaches now finally get the chance to battle out their competing strategies in the eight-team tournament. The random draft lottery gives Coach Cole the early edge, as he draws the first overall pick while Alex lands the eighth and final spot. But using some classic Duck ingenuity, Nick agrees to help Alex wheel and deal to move up in the draft. Using his fantasy sports experience and his knowledge of the other coaches and their personalities, he helps Alex trade up one pick at a time until she’s eventually secured the number two pick. Approaching draft night, Alex has one last trade up her sleeve. She uses Coach Cole’s competitive drive against him, suggesting that it would be pretty easy for him to put together a win with the first pick and facing no adversity. She claims that the optics of him hanging a banner and celebrating a win at his own camp don’t prove much. Feeling challenged, he claims he can beat her even if she has the advantage and swaps places with her. Armed with the number one overall pick, Alex surprises the entire camp by selecting Nick (who was dead last in the player rankings). Inversely, Coach Cole uses the number two pick to take the highest ranked player with NHL-caliber talent, AJ Lawrence. Alex goes on to take Koob, Maya, Sam, and Sofi, ultimately reuniting nearly all of the Ducks, while Coach Cole rounds out his team with more and more talent. Going against their own hopes, both Alex and Coach Cole decide against picking their kids. Coach Cole eventually picks Evan, with Evan thanking his mom for not picking him and for letting him chase his goals. As expected, Alex uses the final pick of the draft to pick Coach Cole’s son, Jace. Coach Cole admits that it was a struggle to leave Jace on the board, but Jace genuinely thanks him for the fresh start. While the draft results aren’t surprising, they are fully heartwarming. The episode winds down with the coaches each announcing their team names: Dominate; Focus; Perseverance; Hustle; Endurance; Accountability; and Intention. Once again bucking the camp’s trend and doing her own thing, Coach Alex chooses an objectively much cooler team name: The Mighty Ducks. Even though you could see it coming from a mile away, it was a tear-jerking moment (and not just because all of the other team names sounded like they came from a poster for a motivational speaker). Coach Cole criticizes Alex, accusing her of undermining everything that the camp stands for and works towards by “drafting some of the worst players here to make them feel better.” Alex counters, insisting that she picked them because she knows that winning teams are just that: teams. ‘Draft Day’ sets up another chapter in The Mighty Ducks long franchise history of underdog stories. Game Changers puts a spin on the traditional David vs. Goliath setup, with Evan and Jace playing wild cards on their respective teams. Plenty is at stake beyond the shot to take on Team Canada as tournament play kicks off next episode. Written by Shae Rufe

It’s always important to trust the people who prove their loyalty to you. At the beginning of this season, Mariner was willing to do whatever it took to prove her mom’s innocence. She believed in Captain Carol Freeman, so much that she stole the Cerritos. Mariner is a wild card, but she is undoubtedly loyal to a fault. She has proven that time and time again through her actions. Yes. She’s reckless and impulsive, but she is fiercely loyal. That loyalty is tested to the max when the Cerritos is visited by a reporter during a post second contact check up on a planet. Captain Freeman is on edge and wants everything to be perfect for this visit. The California Class Ships have a reputation among Starfleet, the Cerritos especially. Freeman just wants everything to be in tiptop shape to impress the brass and the reporter. This lends to her canceling the annual pie eating competition and grounding Mariner and her friends. Literally. Beta shift is suspended until after the reporter’s visit. It’s a strange way to handle things, considering. The pressure is starting to get to her. Freeman even has a list of approved crew members that can be interviewed by the reporter That only goes so well. Shortly after their planetary visit, where they realize they aren’t needed. They head to the sister planet in hopes of some more action. Between then, Mariner decides she’s not going to be shut out. She manages to talk to the reporter and score a private interview, much to Ransom’s dismay. After Mariner says her piece, the reporter does her final interview with Freeman. Here, she brings up all the bad things that have gone on around the ship and on missions.
It’s a humiliating interview, if it can even be called that. Freeman summons Mariner to the Ready Room for a meeting and the whole bridge is mad at Mariner. Before she even gets a chance to explain, Freeman tears into her. This is all Mariner’s fault after all. Freeman isn’t even sure she can consider Mariner her daughter after this betrayal. Without even listening to Mariner, Freeman transfers her to Starbase 80.
Mariner isn’t going to go there, not really, right? Well, she doesn’t do goodbyes, especially not after how she’s been treated here. She packs and leaves on the shuttle. Meanwhile the Cerritos encounters the Breen on the sister planet they went to check on. They’re saved by a Starfleet drone that seems to have advanced weaponry. Funny how it knew where to go. By the time everything settles, the reporter airs her story. Turns out it wasn’t Mariner after all. Many crew members had negative things to say about the ship. Mariner was the only one praising it. After all she was born into a great family and made a great one of her own on the ship. Freeman desperately tries to contact Mariner, only to find out that she’s resigned from Starfleet. Our Mariner is off being a modern-day tomb raider now. If only those she had been loyal to had been loyal back and believed her. Written by John Edward Betancourt One thing that fans of television can agree upon, is that the STARZ series, P-Valley, is one of the most intelligent and powerful shows out there right now. Simply because it tackles topics that few shows will go near and of course, it is diverse and features phenomenal representation. In addition to that, it also features brave writing and stunning performances from its talented cast members and well, for some time now, we‘ve all been waiting with bated breath to see if by chance this gem of a series was going to receive a third season order and well, we finally have news… great news, in fact. For earlier today, STARZ let the world know that P-Valley will be returning for a third season, and it is wonderful to know that we will be enjoying more powerful storytelling from this series. Plus, we’ll be able to watch Uncle Clifford and the other folks that work and spend time at the Pynk grow and tackle real world challenges and topics and well, here are some more details on this wonderful news, courtesy of STARZ. ‘STARZ has ordered a 10-episode third season of its massively popular, critically acclaimed drama series “P-Valley,” created and executive produced by Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall. The sophomore season of “P-Valley” currently averages nearly 10.3M viewers across linear, VOD and streaming platforms domestically, up +23% vs season one in the same time frame. Season two viewing has catapulted “P-Valley” to the top spot as STARZ’s biggest show.* “‘P-Valley’ continues to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as it captures the nuances of the Mississippi Delta with an unprecedented level of humanity and artistry,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming, STARZ. “This layered drama gets beyond the glitz through authentic and complex characters that have captured the hearts of critics and audiences alike. We cannot wait to see what Katori has in store for us in season three.” "I am blessed beyond measure for this opportunity to write the next chapter of ‘P-Valley.’ With its complex, dynamic, and beautifully flawed characters, this show is a love letter to marginalized communities in the American South who rarely see themselves reflected on screen, and it brings me immense joy to know that it has been embraced by folx worldwide. We wouldn’t be getting back up on that pony, without our fiercely devoted Pynk Posse. Y’all are our fire,” said Katori Hall. “And special thanks to the fuel: everyone who laid hands on this show. From the writers and producers to the cast to the crew to the executives, this show is made with great love, grit and glitter. It’s gonna take us a Mississippi minute before we’re back on your screens again, but best believe it’ll be well worth the wait.” Based on her play Pussy Valley, creator Katori Hall (Pulitzer Prize-winning The Hot Wing King, Olivier Award-winning The Mountaintop and Broadway's Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) serves as showrunner and executive producer. Dante Di Loreto also serves as an executive producer on the series. Lionsgate Television produces “P-Valley” for STARZ. About “P-Valley” “P-Valley” is an hour-long drama that tells the kaleidoscopic story of a little-strip-club-that-could and the big characters who come through its doors – the hopeful, the lost, the broken, the ballers, the beautiful, and the damned. Set against the rural Mississippi Delta in the fictional town of Chucalissa, the Pynk is an oasis in a rough patch of human existence where beauty can be hard to find at the crossroads of grit and glitter. A story of survival, chosen family, soulmates, politics, love and death, “P-Valley” is where trap music meets film noir and dares to ask what happens when small-town folk dream beyond the boundaries of their limited circumstances. In season two, “P-Valley” revealed a whole new Pynk as it struggled to remain open during a pandemic, a battle for the throne, and the possibility of some new blood shaking up the locker room. It took audiences deeper into the lives of the Pynk’s beloved characters as darkness descended upon Chucalissa. “P-Valley” season two stars Nicco Annan (“Uncle Clifford”), Elarica Johnson (“Autumn Night”), Brandee Evans (“Mercedes”), Shannon Thornton (“Miss Mississippi”), J. Alphonse Nicholson (“Lil’ Murda”), Parker Sawyers (“Andre”), Harriett D. Foy (“Pastor Woodbine”), Dan J. Johnson (“Corbin”), Morocco Omari (“Big L.”), Dominic DeVore (“Duffy”), Tyler Lepley (“Diamond”), Jordan M. There was a time, where brutal shows and movies were toned down severely and if by chance, they went darker than usual, that was kept from any kind of promotional material from teasers and trailers. Simply because violence was frowned upon heavily in those mediums and keeping them tamer and keeping the ugly hidden kept audiences comfortable and safe regarding what they watched at home or at the multiplex. For the studios and networks truly believed that is what audiences wanted. But as the years have rolled on and technology has allowed for folks to learn what audiences really want, those restrictions are disappearing slowly but surely.
Since the R rating isn’t quite as stringent as it used to be, or a streamer will be able to tell the story as intended. Not to mention, the red band trailer now clearly advertises what to expect from a show/movie that is clearly darker than the usual stuff we enjoy and well, it just so happens that AMC+ is eager to point out just how incredibly devastating season 2 of Gangs of London is going to be. For earlier today, the network released a red-band trailer for the show, and it is… a doozy for certain and well, since you’re now curious how hard this show is going to go; here is that trailer, and some updated details on season two for you to enjoy, courtesy of AMC+. ‘AMC+ has released a ruthless red band trailer for the critically-acclaimed series, Gangs of London. The award-winning drama became an international sensation in season one, with shocking yet artfully choreographed action scenes and stunt work. The second season returns with its trademark grit and gore on Thursday, November 17 with the first two episodes. Following the premiere, one episode of the eight-part season will debut Thursdays on AMC+, AMC Networks’ premium streaming bundle. In the second season, a new, darker era of chaos and turbulent power struggles comes to London. One year after the death of Sean Wallace and the violent reckonings of season one, the map and soul of the city has been redrawn – the surviving Wallaces are scattered, the Dumanis broken and estranged, and ex-undercover cop Elliot Finch (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Humans, Mr. Malcolm’s List) is now being forced to work for the Investors. To restore order, the investors have aligned behind heroin baron Asif Afridi (Asif Raza Mir, Daaman) and together they have installed a new ruling force in London in the form of brutal gang leader – Koba (Waleed Zuaiter, Baghdad Central). He and his paramilitary enforcers have stamped a new kind of authority; battlefield atrocities, torture, and family kidnap, all coldly designed to terrorize the other gangs into submission. Koba’s vision for the criminal landscape is a dictatorship, a world in which old school gangster codes don’t exist and in which he holds a complete monopoly over London’s drug trade. But this monopoly can’t last forever, and the gangs are fighting back - who will win the battle for London’s soul? Season 2 of Gangs of London will see our old favorites and new players fight back against the new order, forcing sworn enemies to work together and family members to betray each other. Full of twists, turns, brutal murders and exhilarating, cinematic action sequences, the series will introduce us to new characters and unexpected leaders will emerge. Returning cast includes: Dìrísù, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You), Lucian Msamati (His Dark Materials), Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones), Orli Shuka (Save Me), Pippa Bennett-Warner (Harlots), Brian Vernel (Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens), Narges Rashidi (Under the Shadow), and Valene Kane (The Fall). Joining the ensemble cast for season 2 include Jahz Armando, Fady El-Sayed (Baghdad Central), Salem Kali (Un Prophète) and Aymen Hamdouchi (SAS: Red Notice). Gangs of London is created by Gareth Evans and his creative partner Matt Flannery. Gangs of London is a Pulse Films production in association with SISTER for Sky Studios and AMC. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Seven of ‘Andor’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Over the course of the past few weeks, we’ve talked at length about how the Disney+ series, Andor, has done a phenomenal job of taking the Star Wars Universe to new heights from a storytelling perspective. Since this show has provided us with a master class regarding the slow burn style of storytelling and it has of course, explored concepts that few other stories regarding revolutions touch in the slightest. Such as the cost and the difficulties that go into starting one to begin with and well, the series is showing no signs of slowing down regarding such explorations. As evidenced by this week’s tale, which took the time to explore the fallout of the first strike. For ‘Announcement’ covered every critical corner of the galaxy when it came to the fallout of the Rebel Alliance’s move against an Imperial Garrison, and it turned out… that it had a vastly different impact on each of the critical players in this story. For some were heavily inspired by the rebels’ bold act since it finally pushed Mon Mothma to begin to take action to further fund and push the Alliance forward in fighting the Empire. To the point where she finally initiated contact with an old friend to have him take control of her finances in the hopes of getting much needed funds to this fledging rebellion and she wasn’t the only one inspired by this act, since even Maarva spoke to how this gave her hope in this tale and that she too would stand as needed. But of course, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and the Empire itself… did not do well with taking a proverbial punch to the nose. Since losing that much money was of course, an utter embarrassment and that led to more stringent policies and procedures across the Galactic Empire, the kind that included higher taxes and harsher laws in the hopes of deterring and punishing the Rebellion. Even though some saw such measures as nothing more than a rallying cry for the Rebellion since such stringent measures would indeed push some to join the fight. Not to mention, there was infighting, and pettiness abound in the ISF following this attack, making it clear that the Rebels accomplished exactly what they intended to. In that, they scared the living hell out of the Empire and that would work to their advantage. However, what was truly impressive about this tale, is that it found a way to make its hero… begin to understand the importance of the act he took part in. For Cassian returned home and paid off debts before using the rest of his cut to just hang out on a leisure planet, all in the hopes of enjoying a life away from turmoil and the Empire and everything in between. But a chance encounter on a normal day for Cassian, led to his arrest and that arrest brought forth a harsh and horrifying sentence. One that appeared to be poised to rob him of freedom and peace, and while there was no resolution as to how he was going handle that reality since the episode faded to black after his six-year sentence was handed down, it was obvious that this surprise is meant to teach him so much. Specifically, that there is no escaping the clutches of Emperor Palpatine and his sham of a Galactic Empire and that he has to a choose a side. There’s no more in between in this galaxy, courtesy of his own actions. But while we wait to see how he escapes this mess and how quickly he learns the lesson, we can in fact… offer up applause for another incredible episode from this series. One that continues to lay the groundwork for the Galactic Civil War in a masterful and beautiful manner, so that what Luke Skywalker and others will fight for in a few years… has meaning and gravity and so that Cassian can become the inspiring hero we met in Rogue One, and well… this cliffhanger will make the wait for next week’s episode a difficult one. Since it is clear that we are quite close now to the moment that Cassian Andor picks a side. The one that will change the course of the galaxy for decades to come. Until next time. Please enjoy this Sneak Peek from Episode Four of Shantaram, which debuts on Apple TV+ tomorrow (10/20/22). Written by Emily Auskaps

This episode finds Jenny and Beau investigating the stabbing of Jody Cutter in her backyard while she was home alone. Her daughter Autumn, who found Jody the next morning, and husband Grant, initially offer no meaningful leads, but a canvass turns up footage from a neighbor’s wildlife camera of a man in a wolf mask with a sizeable wound to his arm leaving their property. After further questioning, Autumn admits that her mom was having an affair with the owner of antique store, Craig. Craig owns an ultra-creepy antique store, one that even sells masks like the one seen in the video footage of the killer, but he proclaims his innocence. Jody was the love of his life, and she was still alive last night when he left her after sharing dinner and drinks. Craig recognizes the wolf mask as the one he sold to Jody last Halloween. She and her husband Grant went to a party together as Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. At the bike shop that Grant owns, Jenny and Beau speak with Scott, to confirm Grant’s alibi for the previous night. Scott confirms that he and Grant worked through the night, but Grant did leave for a late-night pizza run. Scott tells them they had just missed Grant who was headed to their shipping warehouse. When Poppernak reports that Grant hasn’t been seen all day at the shipping warehouse, Beau and Jenny race to the Cutter house. They find Grant lying on the kitchen floor, suffering from severe stab wounds and Autumn is missing. Grant manages to survive, and from his hospital bed he tells Jenny and Beau that it was Scott who’s taken Autumn. Jody had tried to warn him that Scott was obsessed with their daughter, but he hadn’t listened. When Jenny and Beau arrive to Scott’s house in the dark, it is surrounded by police cars and Poppernak says the house is clear. Observing the house’s interior, Beau muses to Jenny that the dimensions seem off. They head upstairs to check further. Jenny finds blood on a bedroom doorknob. Inside the bedroom, the sound of muffled music can be heard. Behind the closet is a secret bedroom built especially for Autumn and filled with items from her entire childhood. Scott has been planning this for many years. Jenny and Beau find Autumn drugged and chained. The power goes out and Scott slithers from beneath the bed and attacks them with a knife. They both struggle with Scott, Beau sustaining a wound to the shoulder before Jenny finally shoots him.
They reunite a tearful Autumn with her father Grant in his hospital room. They are heartbroken at their loss, but at least have each other to lean on. Jenny remarks about importance of a loving father to Beau as they leave the hospital.
Meanwhile, Sunny is trying to quash suspicions over Paige’s disappearance left and right. Her husband Buck confronts and tells her he knows she’s been lying and sneaking around and that Walter’s around. Buck demands that Sunny take care of Walter, who he considers dangerous. We learn why: Walter killed his adoptive parents by trapping them in their home and watching them burn. Sunny’s solution is to have Walter move to a different location, an idea he hates. Walter insists there no need for him to move but Sunny worries people searching for Paige will stumble across him. When she returns that night with Buck, an ugly confrontation among them ensues. Sunny tells Buck off and is then left at an impasse with Walter. She reminds him she loves him before she leaves him. An eye is seen peering out of a knothole in the wood of Walter’s place after everyone has left. It turns out Walter is holding a wounded and bandaged Paige after all. Cassie is still diligently looking into the facts surrounding the missing backpacker. She runs into Cormac, Sunny’s other son, while stocking up on rock climbing supplies to explore Deadman’s Drop. He insists on joining Cassie. They ride ATVs up to Deadman’s Drop where Cassie discovers blood on the rocks below. Cormac suggests an animal may have fallen to its death, but Cassie points out the lack of a carcass. They notice vultures circling in the distance and Cassie wants to hike over to investigate. Cormac protests that it will take them until after dark to reach that location, but a little teasing from Cassie and he agrees to join her. It is indeed dark when they reach their destination. Cormac’s flirty banter is interrupted by Cassie. There it is. The body of the missing backpacker, Mark Woodman. |
