After all, they tend to follow the same formula. Wherein the hosts, or hosts, pick an exotic location, travel there… teach us about the food and the culture right quick before heading onto their next destination. And this is so lather, rinse, and repeat, that there isn’t anything overtly new and exciting about that type of show. But of course, creatives have taken notice of this and in the past couple of years, there has been a push to change the format of the travel/road trip television series to spice them up again, and STARZ is a network that has been part of that push. For they are the home of Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham, a series that definitely spiced things up for this particular type of show, and well… it was so good and so dynamic and unique that STARZ made the easy decision to green light a second season of Sam and Graham’s adventures. But alas, we haven’t heard much about season two past that announcement, but that all changed today. For earlier, STARZ unveiled the release date for season two of the show, and some first-look photos for it as well and since you’re here because you’re a fan of this refreshing travel show and are eager for more… here are all the details regarding season two, and those first look photos, courtesy of STARZ. ‘STARZ announced today that the hit travel docuseries “Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham” will return for its second season on August 11. There comes a point in our teenage years, where we are tasked with something quite important. In that, since we are mere years from adulthood, we must ponder upon what we are going to do with our lives and begin the search for our purpose and our direction and at that age, such thoughts can be quite daunting. Which is why we spend those teenage years doing extracurricular activities at school and joining various clubs. So, we can gently begin to see what kinds of potential careers excite us and what about the world calls to us. That way we can slowly figure out the future and our path and ease into it when the time is right. But that particular understanding is only found in hindsight.
For as teens, we want the answers right away and we do indeed spend time pondering upon what life would be like… if we just knew what our future would hold so we could get a head start on it in the moment and not make mistakes along the way and deal with the doubt that has us making baby steps in the first place. But alas, that’s simply not possible in the real world, so we follow the process and live life to the fullest. But in the world of fiction, that’s a thought that can in fact come to life, and it just so happens that a brand-new show on the Disney Channel is going to explore in detail, what life for a teenager would be like if they knew their fate and knew their path, and that makes Hailey’s On It! quite the special series. For this is a story that introduces us to a teenager named Hailey, who is indeed trying to figure out what her future is going to look like and how on Earth she’s going to accomplish anything worthwhile when the nerves and angst of being a teen are present within her psyche, and well… she is given quite the gift by a visitor from the future. By way of a Professor from the future that has returned to the past to inform Hailey of what awaits her and how to follow that path so her destiny will be fulfilled. And of course, to ensure she finds success in this task, she is gifted with an artificial intelligence assistant named Beta, and well… just like that… Hailey knows her future and knows her worth to the world and that… is what takes us on such a unique journey.
Because such revelations provide Hailey with a unique outlook regarding a concept, we all dreamed of. In that, knowing our future wouldn’t give us peace, nor would it make life easy. If anything, it could potentially add to the anxiety of tomorrow since now, the path is outlined. Which means, one mistake or critical deviation, and the future promised is removed from the equation. But of course, rather than let that anxiety and concern allow for Hailey to crumble, it instead leads to her finest hour. For this is a Disney story after all, and Disney stories always provide both the characters and the viewers with inspiration and strength and moments that lift our spirits, and this series accomplishes that in a beautiful manner.
For this situation, and her wondrous support network consisting of her family, Beta, and her bestie/crush, Scott, helps her to see this as an opportunity… to deliver on her potential. To push herself to new heights and accomplish wonders in the process. To in essence, be the best version of herself to ensure that her magnificent tomorrow becomes reality, and there’s a lot to learn from that. Such as what it means to be fearless in everything we do, and how that can help us with so much in life. But more so, her push to seize her future, helps us to learn that that we should always be the best version of ourselves that we can be in life, partly because such a push will inspire others around us, but more so because… who doesn’t want to be the best version of themselves? Who wouldn’t want the peace and satisfaction that comes with that? If anything, all of those elements bring forth, a stunningly inspiring series. One that features a wonderfully original and refreshing plot, and stories that are fun and relatable for folks of all ages. But above all, it is a story that manages to really take the audience to task. All by asking us, have we given our day our all? Have we worked toward being the person we’ve always wanted to be? And that’s rare to find in storytelling, period, especially in a manner that isn’t preachy or over the top. But this series accomplishes it with minimal effort and the good news is that we are mere hours away from enjoying its wonder. For Hailey’s On It! makes its debut on the Disney Channel tomorrow, and it will be streaming on Disney+ the day after and you should absolutely give this series a look when it arrives tomorrow. Because you can never go wrong with a story that both entertains and challenges the audience, in a positive and dynamic manner. Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Two Finale of ‘The Tower’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. This article also contains discussions regarding domestic abuse and sexual assault, which may be triggering to some individuals.
Over the course of the past few weeks, we’ve talked at length about how The Tower 2: Death Message, on BritBox, has done a phenomenal job of presenting the audience… with the realities that accompany fighting crime. In that, it isn’t a quick and slick process where the clues easily unfold and lead to the criminal in question akin to a line of breadcrumbs. It takes work, and time and even then… justice can be elusive. For criminals are in fact, elusive, and do the most to avoid being caught and that leads to them being on the street far longer than expected, and of course… officers of the law face setbacks and roadblocks in their quest to put evil behind bars. All of which makes it appear as though, finding justice in this modern world is damn near impossible. But thankfully, the season two finale of this series took the time to remind us that all that work and all those struggles eventually pay off and justice can and will be served, but even then… it will take a little bit of effort to make it happen thanks to how badly, bad people, want to avoid accountability. For instance, the apprehension of Mark was almost a disaster since Adama almost went inside her house without knowing that Mark was waiting there for her. But thanks to Steve and Collins, she was warned and able to defend herself. Which brought her precious seconds and minutes that she desperately needed to survive. Because he did inflict some ugly knife wounds on Adama, the kind that put her in the hospital. But Collins arrived at just the right time to stop him and ended his reign of terror, giving rise to safety for his little girl and providing Georgina with the justice she deserved. Speaking of Collins, her case also came to a close in this tale, the long way round as well. Because with the discovery of Tania’s body, a full court press went upon Adrian Stephenson. Since everything pointed to him being the culprit of her end. But alas, he declared his innocence and offered up every single alibi and that forced Collins to race against the clock before he was released, to find the hard evidence she needed to put him away. Which at first, led to what appeared to be… a different culprit, Adrian’s ex-wife. For she confessed to being a broken and jealous wife of a man that floated from sexual affair to sexual affair, with his students, and that her jealousy motivated Tania’s murder, and for a time, that appeared to wrap this up neatly. But a suggestion from Steve to look closer, revealed a sorrowful truth about that wife, and so much more. In that, she too was part of Stephenson’s collection of teenage trophies and in reality… she wasn’t responsible for Tania’s death, she hurt Tania, yes, but she didn’t kill her. She instead just helped to build Stephenson’s alibi, when in reality, he committed that murder and used his power over his ‘love’ to maintain his freedom. But an honest confession from her, and one from Tania’s best friend, another of his many victims… allowed for Stephenson to finally face the music and bring justice to the fallen. Plus, Tania’s mother was finally able to see her daughter again, albeit in an awful state, but that was the closure she needed. It was also, the closure the department needed, and it also led to growth for Collins. Since she was now… an accomplished detective and a hero and earned her spot in the ranks. Not to mention, this season of storytelling led to growth for others. For Adama came to learn in her time in the hospital, what kind of officer she wanted to be… regardless of the risk that could bring and Steve… he finally came to understand what the badge and duty meant and opted to step into the role that Shaw wanted him to. Allowing for some measure of redemption to take place here for the core trio. Oddly though, the only person who didn’t grow… was Shaw. Since he just kept on doing what he does in this tale, but that’s okay… his wife seems ready to wake him up in a later season of this series. Of which we hopefully hear good news about soon. For this season was a powerful ride, one that spoke to some tough topics and offered up some powerful lessons about crimefighting in our world, and the first season had plenty to say as well. Which means the world needs more of this gritty and honest and relevant show, so that we can continue to learn the fine lessons it sends our way. Written by John Edward Betancourt

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 303 of ‘Happy Valley’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
We are taught from a supremely young age, that family means everything, and we should do everything and anything to keep them near us. Because we only get one and we need to cherish that fact because there will come a day when most of them are removed from our lives due to the ravages of old age and the world. So, we hold to that lesson deeply as we grow and try to be the best family member we can, only to learn in adulthood that such an edict… is a difficult one to hold to. Because we come to learn as we grow that we don’t align with the values of some of our family members, or some of them end up being well… utter morons that cause harm and trouble and that teaches us a vastly different type of lesson about family. In that, it isn’t forever and that to maintain our mental health we sometimes have to stay away from those toxic family members and/or cut them out of their lives because giving them our agency, is a painful affair. And that is hard lesson that Ryan and Clare came to learn in the next episode of Happy Valley. For this was the story that saw Catherine confront her sister for her role in putting Ryan face to face with his murderous and monstrous father and well… that led to some powerful moments in this tale. The kind that spoke to how while we value family dearly and understand its importance, when lines are crossed and hearts are broken and betrayed… hard decisions must be made, and Catherine made some difficult ones here for certain. Because she straight up sent Ryan packing with an ultimatum in mind. In that, if he was going to continue to see his father, he couldn’t live with grandma anymore. Because Catherine was still deeply devastated by everything that Tommy did, and she wasn’t the only one that felt rocked by this and well… that left Ryan in a unique place mentally. Wherein he was torn between two worlds since he wanted to continue to learn about his dad since it was his right, but also wanted to please his family. All of which hammered home the lesson in question, and reminded of us how hard it is to take part in such an act when family is involved. But it is sometimes necessary when the pain is too great. But what also made this sequence quite worthwhile, is that it offered an important caveat to the whole mess. In that, if we are going to shun family and walk away, we best express every reason to them as to why. Because Ryan’s big complaint here was that he didn’t fully understand the why behind the decision made to cast him out. In part because, as Clare pointed out, they had kept so much from him. Such as what really happened to his mother and every detail regarding Tommy’s actions back in the day. And that perhaps… would have helped him understand and better decide how to handle this. But alas, what’s done is done and Ryan is caught between a rock and a hard place, and it will be interesting to see how Ryan navigates this new normal in the weeks to come, in between while his grandma navigates the new trouble that is brewing in town. Since the matter with the woman that fell to her death escalated here and has ties to something bigger and uglier. Not to mention… the whole mess with Faisal and Joanna boiled over into something quite horrifying. Since all that fear and all the lies and maneuvering, finally exploded in this tale since Faisal snapped and basically murdered Joanna. Adding a whole new layer to that investigation, and her death will rock the community undoubtedly. But while we wait to see what tribulations await our intrepid Sergeant, we can celebrate one powerfully human tale. One that really did offer up an honest look at the modern family dynamic and what people have to do these days to survive it when it turns sour, alongside a fine examination on how the family unit can also collapse because emotion can get in the way of communication and well, this is a story that leaves us eager for more, so we can see what comes next from the devastating and life-changing decisions made in this tale. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Two Premiere of ‘Cruel Summer’.
For the most part, murder mysteries are quite the linear affair. Wherein, we come to discover alongside the characters in the story, that someone has died and of course… was violently murdered in a manner that is both unsettling and intriguing. For we and the characters are eager to know, who would cross that line and would hurt someone in that manner… and why of course. Because it is the why that makes the murder mystery so compelling and so powerful, and of course… once the case gets underway… all the details present themselves to us in a manner that is both compelling and educational. All before everything comes together in a powerful manner that leads to a satisfying end where justice is served and good triumphs over the monstrous nature of evil. If anything, that particular formula exists and persists simply because… it pleases an audience. For it is the perfect and smooth way to present the case in question and it dangles answers that we desperately seek, and it is a comfortable way to present the audience with murder, and it has in many ways become the standard. But now and again, we run into murder mysteries that are eager to shake up the standard and offer up a case that not only intrigues but surprises us along the way. To offer up a different kind of murder mystery, one that can perhaps spill its secrets in a dynamic and refreshing manner and perhaps explore aspects of the human condition that the traditional path cannot and one such series that has figured out a way to do this, is Cruel Summer on Freeform. For this fascinating series loves to use time-jumps and tidbits in different eras of history to present us with a unique mystery. One that subverts expectations and genuinely surprises us along the way and well, that particular style of storytelling isn’t leaving the framework of this show anytime soon, as evidenced by last night’s season two premiere of the show. For ‘Welcome to Chatham’ and ‘Ride or Die’ were a pair of stories that plunged us into three key timeframes over the course of a single year: the summer and winter of 1999 and the summer of 2000. Wherein we spent time with two teenagers named Megan and Isabella, who through machinations and issues unbeknownst to us in the early parts of this story, find themselves dealing with the loss of a life, a young man named Luke that they both shared emotion with, leaving to us to wonder if the love triangle they clearly shared in, led to his end.
Which is where… this story manages to use those aforementioned elements of surprise and subversion. Since early on, it appears that Isabella is the one who passed, simply because of the stark changes we see Megan go through from ’99 to ’00, and because of the darkness that descends upon the town between that time frame. But learning that Isabella is alive, and that Luke has passed, changes everything for us, as does the reveal that there is more cooperation between Megan and Isabella in the name of friendship, than initially implied and well… let’s be honest… it is the surprises present in these two episodes that truly invest us in this story and keep us eager to continue the journey, and going this route is a move that is quite frankly, downright brilliant.
Because now instead of finding ourselves settled into a traditional mystery, one that we know will slowly feed us the clues we need and nudge us toward an ending we might guess and/or feel comfortable with, we are instead presented… with something messy. Where twists and turns are hanging around every corner and where we some fascinating truths and flaws and choices from the characters helped to lead to this nightmare. But above all… these elements add a shocking sense of realism to the story. Because in reality, murder is messy business. Where people don’t want to be caught and will do whatever they must to keep the truth hidden to avoid accountability for an act they know will end their lives in a different manner. Not to mention, the path that brings people to the ultimate act, is often mired in chaos and poor choices and surprises, much like the ones we find here. All of which invests us in a vastly different manner, wherein we are the ones trying to put the pieces together since the police are just now starting their investigation and that really is a downright incredible way to reintroduce us to this anthology series and a wonderful way to draw us into this world. One where we aren’t even sure if Luke was murdered or if by chance… this is nothing more than a cover up, since this story has yet to truly provide us with concrete evidence that foul play was involved, and well, the only way to find out what happened here… is to continue the journey and let the chaos play out. And truly… it will be interesting to see what we really learn about Megan and Isabella and the events that transpired regarding Luke’s end, as season two of this refreshing and engaging series, brings us closer and closer to the truth. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt The wonder of summer is upon us at last. Which means blue skies will be above us, and lush grass as far as the eye can see will be before us, alongside rays of sunshine that make us smile. That also means, we’ll be out and about more often, to just enjoy everything that nature has to offer But in between those trips to the ballpark and a bike ride through the mountains or on favorite trail, we will be home now and again, and eager to pass the time with our true favorite pastime… television. Because it is a big part of our lives now, and thankfully, television no longer slows down when summer begins, and well, since we are now in early June, today seems like the perfect time to highlight what we believe to be some of the must-watch shows hitting, the airwaves this summer. So, you can properly plan your summer viewing around your summer activities. Enjoy the Summer of the Dead, on AMC Networks If there is one franchise that AMC Networks is known for above all these days, it is The Walking Dead. For this universe is still enjoying its day in the sun thanks to numerous spin-offs and fresh stories to come and well, this summer is filled to the brim with new stories from the land of the dead. For as we speak, Fear the Walking Dead is the midst of its eighth and final season and this bold farewell tour to the boldest chapter in the TWDU is wowing us every step of the way and it is absolutely worth watching this summer. In part to see how this harrowing final storyline is going to play out, but to also pay our proper respects to the series as it begins to wind down and believe it or not, there is more from this universe to enjoy this summer. For June 18th will see the premiere of The Walking Dead: Dead City. A show that puts Maggie Rhee and Negan on the road together to save Maggie’s son from nefarious forces that reside within the isle of Manhattan. Which has now become a true Isle of the Dead, and well… that’s absolutely must-watch T.V. right there. Because it features the return of two highly beloved characters from this saga and pits them in a new location and provides them with a unique journey that is independent of the comics, and it will be interesting to see what scares and epic moments this series will provide us with in a couple of weeks. Epics Abound on Apple TV+ We’ve sung many a praise for the work that Apple TV+ does with programming and rightfully so. Simply because they continue to impress by pushing boundaries and by providing us with one incredible show and film after another. The kind that win the biggest awards, and their summer season is going to add a new wrinkle to their lineup, by offering up shows that are outright epic in nature or carry with them quite the reputation. For instance, Silo, is a true dystopian epic that through six episodes to date, has taken the viewer on quite the powerful ride. One that is starting to feel as though it is ramping up to an epic conclusion, one that takes place at the end of this month, and it really is quite the engaging show. Not to mention, Apple TV+ is about to be home to Hijack (June 28th), a seven-part action thriller, wherein a hijacking plays out in real-time and well… the trailer and everything we’ve seen regarding this show, makes it clear… this is a seven-hour summer blockbuster. One that features Idris Elba, and really… it doesn’t get more epic than that. But it does get… more iconic. After all, Friday will see the premiere of the third season of The Snoopy Show, and that loveable beagle is known and beloved by all, and that too, is quite the summer treat. Variety is the Spice of STARZ It is definitely safe to say that the words diversity, and variety are, synonymous with STARZ. Simply because this network not only offers up diverse programming filled to the brim with stories that reflect America, but they also feature a variety of shows that you won’t find anywhere else, and this summer is going to be filled to the brim with all of that. Fond Farewells, Fun, and Fickle Mysteries on Freeform Speaking of variety, there’s plenty of that to be found on Freeform this summer as well. Simply because they have a trio of vastly different and entertaining shows arriving on the network this summer. For instance, Freeform will be entering the animated foray for the first time ever by way of a new animated comedy series entitled Praise Petey, about a New York gal named Petey who is tasked with quite the new goal when her life comes crumbling down upon her, and that debuts on July 21st this year. Plus, there is a farewell tour to be had this summer. For the first half of the sixth and final season of grown-ish arrives on June 28th, and that is definitely must-watch television since we are in essence, bidding goodbye to one important television franchise. Not to mention, there’s a fresh mystery coming to the network, starting tonight. Peacock Continues to Impress This SummerMake no mistake about it, Peacock is having one heck of a year. After all, it hit the ground running with the wildly original and dynamic series, Poker Face, at the start of 2023, and it followed that up with the equally as brilliant and refreshing show, Mrs. Davis, and now for the summer session… Peacock is planning to continue to impress us all with another unique and original show by way of Based on a True Story.
