Perhaps one of the biggest questions that hangs over humanity, is whether or not bad people or people that have lost their way, can in fact be redeemed. And that question remains simply because… we don’t believe we are privy to the definitive answer. In part because the worst of the worst are usually arrested and locked away for their crimes. Where no one sees what their rehab process looks like and of course, they are eventually forgotten. Not to mention, those that lose their way and wound us, are people we tend to cut out of our lives and that removes us from the possibility of ever seeing who they will become for better or for worse. But we as a species hold out hope for redemption for those individuals in some capacity, so that we can continue to hold out hope that the light will always wash over the dark.
But what’s fascinating is that… we tend to look toward dark moments that carry great heft in our lives or in the lives of others to make the determination as to whether or not we can be saved, when in fact, we are privy to the definitive answer. We simply need to look a little closer. Take for instance our friendships, and the tough times where we see a friend slip into an angry state or a detached one, only to have them come back round to us after they cool off and apologize. Because that is in fact, redemption. Wherein a choice is made to remove oneself from the darkness and the potential for worse, to be better, and be more for those they care about and what’s even more amazing, is that we likely influenced that positive choice without even knowing it. Speaking to how we as a species can do plenty of good and keep so many from slipping into the darkness. As to what that process looks like, well, it just so happens that the season seven premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation took the time to explore it to a tee. For ‘Descent, Part II’ is a story… that saw the crew of the Enterprise in a tough place. Since they were in fact, scattered to the wind and scattered about space thanks to the Borg, and of course, Captain Picard, Counselor Troi, and Commander LaForge… were at Lore and Data’s mercy. Which is where the story was able to explore how we keep people from embracing the worst and instead embrace redemption. Since it was up to Data to cause great harm to his friends in the hopes of furthering Lore’s weird research and well, everyone’s concerted effort to speak to how Data’s actions were so unlike his normal conduct, is indeed the answer to the question. In that, genuine care, and patience and understanding… keep people from going off the deep end since they come to understand they have value and are loved and that… along with some big moments in this tale… saved Data and the day. For this is also a tale that saw Hugh, who we last saw in ‘I, Borg’, return to the fold of the series and while hesitant and afraid to rise up against Lore and trust his old acquaintances from the 1701-D, he eventually understood that what was right was needed here. Which led him to help defeat Lore and reunify his broken shipmates and this is a story that also saw Beverly Crusher, be an outright badass commander. Since she bravely rescued the crew from the surface of the planet and refused to leave anyone behind. Plus, she also made sure that the corrupted Borg vessel would no longer be a threat to anyone, ever again, and it was just great to watch Beverly take the lead and do more for a change and yet… there were still more big moments present in this tale, specifically… what occurred during the ending of this particular adventure. Simply because at long last, the Sons of Soong faced off for the final time. A move that brought Lore’s journey in this particular series to an end, since he would never be seen in TNG ever again and that oddly enough… added a bittersweet taste to an outright excellent premiere. Because Lore’s end here, reminded us of the fact that this episode served as the beginning of the end for the series, and loose threads in this manner, were set to be resolved so the crew could enjoy one last final adventure under the TNG banner on the small screen. Making this a slightly emotional episode for certain, one that reminds us that everything to come, would inch us to closer to that end. But before we reach the final mission… we really can celebrate a premiere as epic as ‘The Best of Both Worlds, Part II’, because this had action, adventure and meaning, and it will be interesting to see if the rest of these final voyages, maintain the high quality of this wonderful tale. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Nine of ‘Lopez vs Lopez’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Diversity and representation are supremely important right now in popular entertainment and rightfully so. Because our books, our shows, and our movies, should resemble what the world actually looks like and they should feature stories that tell tales about other cultures, so we can learn more about cultures we know nothing about. But above all what these stories should do, is break down stereotypes and removes stigmas regarding other races and other cultures, so that we can come to understand that we are one people, and that while we do indeed harbor unique traditions within our respective cultures, the human experience is something we all share in and one particular series that is excelling at this right now, is Lopez vs Lopez on NBC. Because not only is this series doing a wonderful job of putting the Latino and Latinx Experience on display and teaching us a great deal about Latino culture and its beauty and its opportunities, but it keeps finding ways to break down barriers and stereotypes, and this week’s episode is a fine example of that. For ‘Lopez vs Van Bryan’ takes the time to explore the reality that fathers that don’t wish to be responsible or in their children’s lives, is not something that is exclusive to Latinos or BIPOC individuals either. Bad parenting and dads that can’t cut it or are toxic in nature are everywhere to be found, and that is important to note because that does remove that stereotype from the equation, and it accomplished that particular feat… by introducing us to Quinten’s father. For Sam Van Bryan came to visit the Lopez/Van Bryan household and well, at first glance… it seemed as though this was going to be a story about George facing his shortcomings as a father because of his choice to steer clear of Mayan’s life for so many years. For Sam was… the model father and model grandfather. He was eager to speak to his son and see him and he was equally as eager to spend time with Mayan and Chance. Because the man just seemed to be filled with endless love and endless energy, and he was also a man that conducted himself with incredible integrity, since George did want to find a flaw in his personality and well… George should have been careful of what he wished for. Because a simple dinner, revealed a disappointing side to Sam. Because he was… abusive toward Quinten at that dinner, hinting greatly that Quinten wasn’t the son Sam expected him to be, and as George spent more time with Sam, he came to learn that Sam was not that great of a father. For he was supremely hard on Quinten and saw him as something of a failure. Which took George by surprise, since Sam seemed so together, and also because… Sam was wrong. Quinten was a great dad, that valued family and clearly wanted to be the opposite of his own dad. Which is why he went part time at his day job, to support Mayan and his son, to be there for every critical moment. But rather than be rude about it to Sam and perhaps complicate the situation, George very beautifully pointed out those observations and how that is a bigger win than Sam ever knew. Giving rise to an understanding and a connection between George and Quinten since the latter heard that conversation. But what made this entire episode so powerful, is that journey between George and Sam. Since it really spoke to how poor parenting is indeed, a human experience, and not the butt of a racist joke or exclusive to the stereotypes we’ve seen before. It’s just a fact, and it is something that will take a long time to fix. But calling it out and recognizing its impact on a popular television series on a major network is a big start to course correcting that kind of problem, and once again, that kind of commentary reminds us of the brilliance of this show. Because it really is speaking to topics that no other show is right now, and it is working hard to break down walls and stigmas to showcase… life. Life as it really is in the modern United States of America and it truly does leave us eager to get to get to next Friday, so we can embrace another incredible lesson from this incredible show. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 203 of ‘BMF’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Traditions are viewed in quite the positive light and understandably so. For they are designed to celebrate rich moments in either human history and/or family history and taking part in them, keeps the past alive and honors our elders, and we should be proud of taking part in such an act. But what’s fascinating about humanity, is that… as is the case with a lot in our world… we tend to ignore the fact that not all traditions are positive in nature. We only want to see them as lovely, and that’s why we don’t think about the negative things we do on days that are anniversaries of something painful or toxic in our lives, as is tradition. Nor we do like to talk about some of the uglier American ones that happen within our cities. Take for instance, ‘Devil’s Night’ in Detroit. An evening where frustrated citizens of a city that has struggled to take care of its people, take to the streets, and burn whatever they can for catharsis. Something that is obviously negative in nature and should not be done… but it became habit, tradition, because of the release it offered an angry populace and well, that tradition and the negativity and fury it spread to all, is top of mind today because it served as the setting for last night’s episode of BMF. For last night’s episode, which shared the namesake of that dark day… saw the darkness this ugly holiday generated spread to the characters we know and love. Which caught them up in some ugly vibes and ugly moments. For this is a night that inspired a need for vengeance from Terry. Because he paid the piper for messing with the brochures of that other car company. Which in turn motivated him to get some real ugly payback, the kind that will force that rival business to stumble and force its boss to heal for a bit since Terry and Meech tuned him up. Speaking of Meech, well he was dealing with a double whammy of issues with his business. In that, B-Mickie was being pressed to lie to him and bring him in. A move that came about from the fact that he was beginning to question his life in the drug trade since he learned that Kota died with his baby in her womb, and because he and Meech saw the ugliness of their business firsthand when Meech was searching for Travis at K-9’s bequest, to garner more product. Because this year’s Devil’s Night was in the midst of a drought thanks to a DEA seizure off the Florida coast and bringing Travis in would secure product. But alas, B-Mickie put Travis down too, which lost BMF the product and potentially prompted him to betray someone he was close to, regardless of his concerns about the business. But a new problem prevented that. Simply because, Lamar was healed enough to function and was going about town to see his family from afar and of course, he was watching and waiting for a chance to strike and strike he did. Since he pulled up mere moments before Meech left to arrive at his own arrest and struck true with a single bullet. Putting Meech on the road to the hospital and recovery. Which was sadly, the perfect and fitting end to this dark and ugly night of twisted tradition. If anything, this was… quite the bold episode. Since everyone outside of the Flenory brothers indulged in darkness as well. Since we saw Charles ponder upon infidelity, and even Bryant and Veronica went to some ugly places mentally, and it was quite powerful to see Meech and B-Mickie stare down the end result of what they do and the sorrow and strife that comes with it and this episode, deserves a round of applause for going this route. Since it really hammered home the dark nature of the drug world and what it does to users and pushers and kingpins alike, and writer Mike Nguyen Le also deserves some applause, for perfectly blending everything together in this tale and setting the stage for dark horizons. Because not only are we left stunned at the end of this one, but also worried. For this episode was likely a harbinger of things to come since ‘the life’ is only going to get harder as this journey continues along. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Three of ‘Kold x Windy’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Over the course of the past couple of weeks, we’ve talked at length about how the WE tv series, Kold x Windy, has done a phenomenal job of offering up a realistic look at the process of chasing one’s dream. Simply because this series has held nothing back in pointing out that the chase is quite the difficult affair, one wrought with tough decisions and setbacks and moments of doubt, and some shocking epiphanies regarding the nature of change and how hard that can be to embrace in the midst of our pursuit. And that’s important to point out because this series is clearly not going to let up on such matters in the slightest. For it truly wants to explore every single aspect and moment that really comes with chasing our dreams as evidenced by last night’s episode. Because what we often forget about the chase and what is rarely portrayed on screen or in print regarding it… is the large amount of downtime that accompanies the chase. Because it isn’t some intense pursuit that burns every waking moment of our lives. There’s a lot of life we have to live in between meetings that give us hope or moments that tell us we’re on the right track. Not to mention, there are still bills to pay and day jobs to work in between the disappointments and that is why ‘We Got Ops!’ is such a brilliant tale. Because that is precisely what this particular episode focuses upon, the downtime and life that happens in between the big moments, and it accomplished that feat, by having Malika and Renee enjoy a little quiet for a change. For there wasn’t much going on with their careers as the moment, aside from their manager making a push to have them work with a local Chicago influencer and that allowed for the two of them to just… live and deal with all the ups and down that life has to offer. For Renee, that involved having the past come back to haunt her, since her soul was shaken and disturbed by the dark act she committed upon that innocent young girl. To the point where she was abusing whatever drugs she could to clear her mind. A move that put her life at risk since she did find herself in the hospital at one point. But trauma runs deep, as does guilt, and really, Renee’s story here was designed to explore how life isn’t always rosy and that we do reap what we sow, and it will be interesting to see how she handles this down the line since it is genuinely eating at her through and through. As for Malika, her journey was a touch more on the positive side and spoke to how life and downtime can help focus us as to what we really want out of life and our dream. Which for her involves having a stable relationship with someone that truly values her and cherishes her, as evidenced by how she and Marlon click and how she views him. Plus, the rash of accelerated violence in her town, which many attributed to Drill Music, began to leave her wondering what kind of artist she wanted to be. All of which gave us incredible insight into what Malika wants her future to look like and it was fascinating to learn how eager she is to hone her craft and embrace family life. Something that was reinforced by the heartbreaking interaction with her son in this tale, and this too… will be interesting to follow in the weeks to come since it, and other factors could lead to real conflict for the band. Because in addition to the possibility of a clash over direction and desire, the police continue to inch closer and closer toward Kold and Windy. To the point where they’ve even infiltrated their inner circle with informants to bring justice to the streets. Putting this duo on a timer regarding change and focus and that too, motivates us to continue to the journey. But before we see what comes next, we can in fact… celebrate another brilliant tale. One that really did showcase an aspect of chasing one’s dream that is so rarely discussed this exploration almost felt utterly original in nature. But life is full of surprises, and we should talk about this stuff more, since this is the stuff that defines an artist, and this show deserves a round of applause for going this route with the story. Since it added honesty and depth to an already raw and dynamic story. Until next time. Please enjoy this sneak peek from Shape Island, which debuts on Apple TV+, tomorrow, 1/20/2023. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 305 of ‘Jack Ryan’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
When we last settled in to discuss the always engaging Prime Video series, Jack Ryan, we pondered upon whether or not the last episode was indeed a turning point. For the majority of the first half of the season was all about that world-building and plot development to set the stage for more, but the show's desire to push the story a little further in the last episode, and bring back some its trademark tension and action, is what hinted at the potential for something new on the horizon and wouldn’t you know it? That episode was indeed a harbinger of things to come. For the next episode of this fascinating saga, upped the ante regarding the danger that now surrounds the world, courtesy of Sokol. A feat that ‘Druz’ya | Vragi’ accomplished by way of two key plotlines. One of which followed up on our concerns regarding Alena. Because when we last saw her, Radek was hauling her off to heaven knew where and sadly… this episode informed us, to her seeming doom. Since he brought her to the dock where she and her father would often gather when they needed to get away. In the hopes of baiting Petr to follow so he could easily be dealt with, and Alena shortly thereafter. Giving rise to the reality that Petr was facing his own insurrection and rebellion. One that Radek was willing to go the extra mile to complete. But alas he was no match for the wily old solider and while Alena was safe and sound by the end of this madness, she was transformed. Since she did come to learn the truth about her father and his role in all of this, and no longer felt safe. Meanwhile, in another part of the world, Jack and his team were looking for the actual Sokol device, in the hopes of shutting it down. A move that gave him Wright’s backing at last and revealed some horrifying secrets about this weapon. In that, it’s been hiding in plain sight at the original facility but went under the proverbial radar because of the fact that its home was disguised as a horrible hot bed for radioactive activity and within its walls… more secrets and worries were hiding. In that, Luka was overseeing its final construction stages. Simply because he believed that finishing the device would lead him to the real mastermind behind this idea, which while noble is also quite dangerous, since it means that Sokol is still out there and near ready for deployment. Because despite Jack’s best efforts to stop Luka and the transfer of the device, it was whisked away and all that remained for the team was a horrifying clue as to how exactly Sokol and the plan to resurrect the Soviet Union was going to work. For Jack was able to uncover that Sokol is more than just a low yield nuclear weapon, it is designed to look like an American missile, and its deployment and delivery would make the United States look as though they were suddenly an aggressor. Which would undoubtedly force a domino effect, where allies would leave NATO and turn their back on America and join the new Iron Curtain to find protection… after the dust settled from a war of course, and well… that was hell of a way to raise the stakes in this episode. Because just like that, the United States of America is now a patsy that doesn’t know the role its name is about to play in a risky gambit. Because nuclear weapons are no joke and even toying with them could lead to greater disaster. All of which sets the stage for what should be a powerhouse final three episodes in the season, as our heroes do everything, they can, to stop this wild plan from taking shape and well, that makes this… a phenomenal episode. Since it is indeed the keystone to what comes next, and it was intense and engaging and everything we love about this series. And above all, it pushes us to start the next episode post haste, so we can see what comes next in the grand and desperate fight to stop Sokol from changing the world for the worse. Until next time.
