THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...
Last night it was all about the aftermath of the last few weeks of The Walking Dead and man, did the show really delve into some dark places. In fact, this was a tough one to get through so let's talk it out together as we recap the bleak and powerful, "Them".
The Good: I for one, loved the desolation that accompanied this episode. I mean, wow, there was nothing that felt good or right about this go round for Rick and the gang and it made for some tough moments to watch and some fine acting for the cast. I mean really, how on earth did anyone not tear up when Daryl finally broke down and cried? But it doesn't end there, Maggie was at her lowest for the first time on the show. Hell, even Father Gabriel turned his back on his faith when the gang was reduced to eating a roving pack of dogs to survive.
It was that aspect of survival, and being forced to make it through the day regardless of the circumstances that really drew me in this week, because we have never seen our characters like this. We've never seen the losses mount like this, nor have we seen the aftermath. It was beautiful, haunting and compelling, and perhaps the highlight of the whole mess was Rick's powerhouse speech about how he got through the day. All of this made for an ugly and angry episode that just so happened to have its own special happy ending with the mystery man named Aaron. And if he is the Aaron I think he is from the comics, we are in for a treat!
The Bad: Sasha. She was my point of ire for the night. I get how upset she is, she lost her brother and all. I get that some people deal with loss and pain differently than others, but her actions were selfish and stupid. She almost hurt both Abraham and Michonne in her wild and angry grieving process, oh and she was a complete and utter jackass to everyone in the group this week. It just seemed out of place for the character, and quite frankly, made her extremely unlikable. If a walker took her down next week, I don't think I'd be too upset.
The Verdict: This was a tough one to get through, for all the right reasons. So much pain and suffering, but at the same time, we were treated to some fantastic performances and character development that we haven't had in a little while. It's good to see this return, and I do hope Aaron's appearance means a big storyline and safe heaven are on the horizon...
