THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...
After weeks of tension, worry and panic over how the situation would work out in the city of Alexandria; last night we were treated to a ninety minute season finale of The Walking Dead that well...left us filled with tension, worry and panic. So let us get right down to talking about the amazing episode that was "Conquer".
The Good: Man, my heart was racing this entire episode. From the moment we laid eyes on Morgan, to the final precious seconds of season five, the finale went off with a bang and well...I'm honestly surprised the death toll was so low. In fact I think we all steeled our nerves in preparation of who would live and who would die. Turns out...the principal cast is still intact. But let's talk death in a little bit. First we need to discuss the sheer awesomeness that is Morgan. He returned last night in incredible fashion, immediately opening up the episode by squaring off against the biggest mystery of the season...the Wolves. Turns out they are a group of scavengers who take whatever the hell they want whenever the hell they want and they messed with the wrong dude as Morgan put them down in smooth fashion. But, we would see them again later on when Daryl and Aaron, looking for new inhabitants for Alexandria discovered a horrific trap set by the Wolves that nearly cost them their lives...until Morgan showed up that is and saved their hides.
But the bulk of the story was set in our unsettled city where things were clearly still a mess. Deanna was planning to let the town decide as to whether or not Rick should stay and as we waited for that tough meeting, man...tons went down. Nicholas tried to kill Glenn outside of the city, Abraham made up with Eugene, Carol continues to become the show's scariest character and Father Gabriel screwed things up again. Attempting to toughen himself up, he went out into the world and found and destroyed a walker feasting on a man, and he was kind enough to put the man out of his misery. But upon his return, he was asked to seal the gate...and he left it open.
Rick took notice and discovered evidence of walkers, and did what needed to be done while his fate was decided by the town. While Rick handled the dead, Gabriel and Sasha, both at their breaking points began to battle it out in Gabriel's makeshift church, with Sasha nearly killing the padre until Maggie left the meeting to intervene. But while she was gone, Rick finally arrived at the meeting with a walker's corpse in tow to show the people of Alexandria at last that threats existed and that threats would continue to come. Finally...there was understanding and belief in Rick...then a drunken Pete had to come in and screw everything up. This is where death finally showed up in the episode with Pete slashing Reg's throat with Michonne's sword before Rick was finally given the order to put an end to Pete's life, just as Aaron and Daryl returned with Alexandria's newest inhabitant...Morgan.
All I can say is wow. This was a tense and fantastic finale that told a complete story, and I'm not sure we could ask much more of the show. Not to mention the fact that well...we were blessed without any more heartbreak of a major character saying goodbye on the show. That's a big win, but I do love the fact that the clashing of the two worlds in this city have come to an end and now they can focus on the future. I also love the fact the big bad for the next season is set up since the Wolves now know where Alexandria is and they are no doubt heading that way. And a final note on the Wolves, the fact they know how to wrangle walkers and apparently use them as weapons is quite frankly...genius and terrifying all at once. They will be a formidable foe for Rick and the town.
The Bad: The fact that Father Gabriel is still alive. The man is a coward, he is clearly a giant screw up and ironically, considering his warning to Deanna, death seems to follow him where ever he goes. He let the walkers in for heaven's sake and tried to get Sasha to kill him. The man is a mess and he is the real danger to the group. Despite the revelation he had in front of Maggie at the end of the episode.
The Verdict: This was simply an incredible way to end season five. That's really all there is to it. Every plot line from the last few weeks was resolved, and the next season is set up and I cannot wait to see where we are headed. Sadly now comes the long and painful wait to get to season six to discuss the dead. But the good news is, the wait won't be too long. Dan and I will be back to discuss the prequel show Fear the Walking Dead when it arrives later this summer and of course we will be back in the fall when The Walking Dead returns. Until then my friends!
