THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...
Something incredibly special is happening on The Walking Dead. Amidst the gore and guts, the show is building to something amazing. It is quickly becoming the first show about the end of the world at the hands of walking corpses to look at what it will take to rebuild humanity and how that is unfolding is absolutely fascinating.
You see, the show is quickly combining the past and the present to determine the future. Representing the past are the good people of Alexandria. Deanna's vision for the world of tomorrow, is to continue the status quo. This is a world that well, looks exactly like ours today. People go to work, do their thing, and much like a gated community, live behind their walls in relative comfort and peace. In this case of course the dead walk, but like I discussed last week, these people seem oblivious to that fact for the most part.
On the other hand, you have Rick and his group representing the present. They are war torn soldiers, having spent a long time in the battlefield beyond, fighting death on a daily basis and well, they are currently beyond diplomacy or discussing their options in a committee. They think on their feet and get it done and the clash of these two worlds and which one is the correct one is starting to take shape and it is leading to what appears to be a grand conflict between Deanna and Rick. Yet the irony is...that very conflict is what brought the world down to begin with.
You saw it for the first time last night, people running in fear from the dead in situations where they could have stood their ground and defeat those rotten monsters with a little patience and care. Despite the problems other people present, the dead are the real threat and that's what makes this upcoming conflict so sad. Because in the end both sides are correct. Rick's way is appropriate in some respects, as is Deanna's and that's what the show is trying to tell us...that when it comes down to it, working together when the dead walk the earth, is the only way to survive.
There is a time and place for people to forget the horrors of this new world, allowing them to relax and unwind. But there is also nothing wrong with doing what must be done and not spending a lot of time debating what might be the best solution. My only hope now is that Rick and Deanna figure this out before its too late. We know there are threats out there. We are seeing more walkers around the city every week, and the strange "W" zombies are starting to appear. If they don't find that common ground and come together, it won't matter if bravado or weakness is the better way to go...because the end result of that endless debate is nothing short of death, and we all know in this universe, that's a horrible fate.
