THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...
A fight to end all fights, right? Sort of. This episode Dean finally faced Cain, but the circumstances were not that simple. Cain is back, he's been busy hunting down entire family blood lines. He's kind enough to bury them at least. Why is he doing this? Seems Cain has gone full dark side again. Only, he's missing the blade. Which isn't stopping him from hunting down murderers. He even takes out a guy on death row.
That is suspicious enough to get the Winchesters involved. Castiel stumbles upon the mass grave site and even meets up with Cain. Of course, Cas is spared, for now, but with a warning he'll be coming after Dean soon enough. Cain does confirm that there is no cure. By the time the boys figure out that Cain is killing bloodlines, they discover the last victim had an estranged son. They track down the kid and watch over him.
Meanwhile Crowley and Rowena are getting along all right. She does finally reveal how she wants his help killing the Grand Coven. Our king wasn't fooled and knew she'd been manipulating him all along. A call from Dean has him leaving her with the First Blade. The plan is simple. Use the kid to get Cain into a Devil's trap. Dean will use the first blade to kill him, give it back to Crowley. Unless he goes dark side himself...then they need to take him out. A simple plan, and it works to a point. Cain falls for the trap long enough to land in the Devil's trap. The boy was an illusion spell, and Sam, Cas, and Crowley leave Dean to handle it. The fight is anything but fair. Dean is holding back...which isn't a surprise.
Cain finally gets the upper hand and the First Blade, he tells Dean how things will end if he continues this path. How he'll regret killing Crowley; how killing Castiel will nearly kill him; that killing Sam will destroy his very being. But, Dean isn't one to stand by and be murdered. He take Cain's knife and slices his hand off. Then takes the Blade and finally tries to reason with him. Cain is convinced his bloodline is tainted. He won't stop, no matter what. So Dean does what he has to. And then he gives the First Blade to Castiel, not Crowley...that betrayal stings deeply....
But with that, we're left hanging until March 18. When Supernatural returns on their new nights,Wednesday's...hopefully the betrayal was for a reason. Crowley actually thinks of the boys as friends, of sorts.
