Being stranded in a strange place is a fear for a lot of people. Trying to familiarize yourself with your surroundings takes time and that is one reason why some people only tend to do ‘Stay-Cations’ rather than travel. Finding yourself in a seedy motel, or residence does not make a trip very enjoyable, especially when you do not trust your surroundings.
Jack and Stephanie are heading down to Montgomery, Alabama for an engagement. Getting lost on their drive, they find themselves looking for directions to get back on to the highway. Not knowing the area at all, they entrust their faith to Officer Lawdale who gives them a good idea on how to get back, but warns them that the road is very treacherous up ahead. The couple happily takes the directions that are given their way, but find that the road is much worse than expected. Having all four of their tires going flat, the two are left with one alternative, to walk and find help.
The couple stumbles upon an Inn on their travels and decides to stay in it until they are able to find help. The house looks like one of the classic plantation mansions that were very inviting. With the sun starting to go down, Jack and Stephanie entered the Inn to find another couple battling with the same situation was already there. Everything seemed fine between the four, until the power went out in the house causing a little tension between the groups. Randy and Leslie, along with Jack and Stephanie were looking for something, anything to shed some light on the situation, but what they found was much worse than they could have ever expected.
Meeting the family that runs the Inn and lives in the house, tensions rise and while Randy is trying to get cleaned up for dinner, he meets the man of the house, Stewart who is none to happy that anyone would disturb his time. Betty, Stewart’s wife is making up dinner for their four visitors and seems nice, but gets extremely upset when nobody is where they should be. Peter, the couple’s son has eyes for one person and cannot change his mind set at all. The group all sits down for a very uncomfortable dinner and then finds out what is really happening as a strange man name Mr. White comes calling and traps them all in the house. Having sent a message down the chimney, Mr. White expects one dead body before dawn, or nobody will be able to escape the house alive.
House follows two couples as they try to determine who, if any of them will be the sacrifice to Mr. White. Not getting any help from the owners of the house and actually being hunted by them, the two couples find themselves trapped in the basement of the old mansion along with a startling discovery, the house is haunted as well. With the house feeding off of the fears of the group and the home owners turning out to be much more demented than they could have ever expected, Jack, Stephanie, Randy and Leslie need to team up to fight off the oncoming advances of the home owners, along with the calls from Mr. White who only wants blood. Stumbling around the basement, they find another survivor, a young girl named Susan who has a plan for their salvation, but something is holding the group back from hearing her plans. The house will never give up, evil is kept in the walls and is not going to let anyone out alive without some kind of sacrifice.
As haunted house stories go, this could be one of the finest, but it is not just the house that is coming down, it is the psychological games that are being played on the visitors. Having everyone at each other’s throat while trying to survive makes the story just that more scary. Watching as the group comes up with new ways to protect themselves, along with having doppelgangers attacking them as the house gets stronger, keeps you wanting to turn to the next page and figure out what is really happening. The light will always penetrate the darkness, wherever you are. Remember that in your travels and you will feel much more comfortable. Happy reading.
